Suburban Hospital is a 220-bed community, not-for-profit hospital and a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine. Suburban Hospital is located in Bethesda, Maryland and has served Montgomery County and the surrounding area with clinical excellence and compassionate patient care for over 75 years. This hospital is distinguished by a level II trauma center, certified stroke center, and centers of excellence in cardiac care, orthopedics, neurosciences and oncology. We have collaborative practice and research agreements with the National Institutes of Health for stroke and cardiovascular surgery. The Director of Pharmacy is Jennifer Raynor, RPh, MSM, MHA, the Residency Program Director is Jasmine Sudhakar, PharmD and the Residency Coordinator is Umair Ansari, PharmD, BCCCP, BCPS, MBA. The pharmacy has academic affiliations with the University of Maryland and opportunities for elective rotations with area hospitals and community clinics.

Our department is committed to delivering a top-quality Pharmacy Residency Program. The Purpose of the PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program is to “build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions” (ASHP Standard 3.1).

We strive to provide challenging and rewarding clinical rotations, along with longitudinal requirements that will allow our residents to build a strong foundation in a multitude of areas including clinical, teaching, and leadership. After completion of this program, we are confident that our residents will be self-directed practitioners who possess the skills to further the profession of pharmacy and the optimal use of medications.

Goals and Objectives

Upon completion of this ASHP-accredited Post-Graduate Year One (PGY-1) Pharmacy Residency, residents will be equipped with knowledge and skills to become highly functioning clinical pharmacists. They will practice as valuable members of the healthcare team with the ultimate goal of providing optimal pharmaceutical care to patients. Residency graduates will demonstrate time management and independent thinking skills that will make them leaders within their practice setting and the profession.

Upon completion of this residency, residents will:

1. Participate confidently and effectively as members of the multidisciplinary health care team to provide evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy management services
2. Demonstrate professional leadership skills to assure the optimal use of medications in a community hospital setting
3. Retain knowledge to provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care to a variety of populations
4. Educate patients, physicians, and other health care professionals regarding the optimal use of medications
5. Exhibit professionalism and exercise appropriate critical thinking skills

Education

Each resident will deliver formal presentations, journal clubs, and in-services. Residents will also precept pharmacy students, and have the opportunity to complete the Teaching Certificate Program through the University of Maryland.

Research

Each resident will complete a longitudinal research project and will present their research at professional conferences, as well as complete a manuscript that can be submitted for professional publication. Residents will also participate in Medication Utilization Evaluations (MUEs).

Application Information

All applicants must have graduated or are a candidate for graduation from a ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy and also follow all rules set by the National Matching Service (NMS).

All applications must be submitted via PhORCAS and through the Suburban Hospital Employment Application Form (see checklist for details). A completed application file is necessary before scheduling an interview. The complete file must be received by no later than December 31 of each year.

Salary and Benefits

Pharmacy residents receive a salary from Suburban Hospital as well as all benefits. These include medical, dental, and life insurance, Metrorail subsidy, and more. More information about benefits are available here.

Paid Time Off

Residents accrue paid time off (PTO) according to the Suburban Hospital policies and procedures. PTO can be used for seminars, interviews, vacation, or sick leave.
