Combined Pediatrics and Medical Genetics Residency

Since 2001, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics and Department of Genetic Medicine have jointly offered a five year combined Pediatrics and Medical Genetics residency program.  Beginning July 2014, we received approval from the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMGG) to offer a four-year curriculum of combined Pediatrics and Medical Genetics residency training at Johns Hopkins. This newly established combined Pediatrics and Medical Genetics residency is structured according to ABP and ABMGG requirements. This fully integrated program aims to train outstanding pediatric geneticists and physician scientists who will become future leaders in pediatric genetics and genomics medicine. Residency training will be completed at Johns Hopkins hospital and affiliated training sites. Residents who have successfully completed this program are qualified and eligible for examinations leading to certifications by ABP and ABMGG in Clinical Genetics.

Residents spend their entire first year of training in general pediatrics. During the second to fourth years, residents alternate their training in medical genetics and pediatrics every 6 months. The last six months of their four-year residency are individualized curriculum. At completion of their four year combined residency, residents are strongly encouraged to complete additional year(s) of clinical and/or laboratory research fellowship training in medical genetics.

Applicants who are interested in this combined training pathway should submit their application through ERAS. Applications will be reviewed by a committee consisting of faculty members from pediatrics and Medical Genetics residency programs. Selected applicants are invited for interview. Additional information on the Board requirements for the combined training in pediatrics and medical genetics can be found at the ABP and ABMGG websites.
