Frequently Asked Questions

  • We only accept candidates through ERAS.

  • As you know, this is the first year that this will be offered to programs and candidates. We are internally evaluating how this will be used in the review process moving forward. While we encourage candidates to utilize this additional opportunity to describe themselves if they are interested in doing so, because this is so new we have no fixed policy at this time as to how or if these will be used during the review process. Candidates will not be penalized if they choose not to complete the supplemental application.

  • Our deadline is November 1.

  • In addition to your Dean's Letter (MSPE), we require three letters of recommendation (preferably one from the Department of Medicine).

  • We will notify you by e-mail by mid-November.

  • You still need to apply through ERAS and must be certified via ECFMG.

  • Certainly, prior clinical experience in the United States is preferred.  However, candidates can be accepted into the program without previous U.S. clinical training.

  • We do not have a minimum score requirement. Every application is considered on an individual basis. However, most candidates selected for interviews have a score of 220 or better and have passed on their first attempt.

  • The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine supports the use of the ECFMG sponsored J-1 for clinical trainees.  We do not offer H-1B1 visas, except to foreign nationals who are graduates of U.S. medical schools.

  • No. Due to the unique longitudinal curriculum, all trainees can only enter our program in the PGY1 position.

  • Yes, we have limited preliminary positions each year. Usually these are for residents who go on to training at Hopkins with neurology, radiology, radiation oncology, ophthalmology and dermatology.

  • Yes, residents in our Physician Scientist Pathway (PSP) may choose to use the two-year research pathway. However, they are not required to do so and do not need to inform us of this decision before joining us. Please indicate in ERAS if you would like to be considered for the PSP. (NOTE: PSP is not a separate NRMP track—please select categorical for the program)

  • Yes, we have a unique Urban Health Primary Care Track. Applicants may choose to apply to both the categorical and Urban Health tracks if they have an interest in exploring both. The urban health track is a different NRMP number and includes a different interview experience from categorical to learn more about the curriculum.

  • Yes. We have an innovative combined internal medicine - pediatrics residency program

  • For March 2023 match, we will be conducting interviews in December.

  • Our Categorical Program NRMP number is: 1242140C0

  • Access to a car is highly recommended. Some rotations will be a few miles from the hospital. In addition, our residents feel that a car lets them enjoy the city and surroundings much more.

  • Currently, because of the COVID pandemic, our school of medicine does not permit outside students for elective experiences.
