The Pediatric Oncology Division at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins includes a wide array of medical professionals and laboratory scientists. Many of our experts are nationally and internationally recognized as leaders in the research and treatment of pediatric cancer.

As a leader in pediatric cancer research, we are dedicated to making new discoveries to improve the lives of children with cancer in Maryland, the nation, and around the world. We are at the forefront of developing new treatments and designing clinical trials for better outcomes for our patients.

    The Pediatric Oncology Nursing Staff is committed to delivering extraordinary family-centered professional nursing care. Through our professional practice model/ primary nursing model and in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, it is our mission to respond to the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of our patients and their families across the continuum of care. Through patient and family education, patient advocacy, and the incorporation of evidence based practice, it is our goal to foster an environment of trust and mutual respect in which to provide safe comprehensive care and promote healing. 

    Vision:

    As pediatric oncology nurses, it is our vision to foster a culture of nursing excellence. In a dynamic and collaborative environment, we will continually strive as individuals and as a team to assess our performance and to implement innovations for performance improvement. We will offer support to our colleagues and nurture our own resilience so that we have the fortitude necessary to mature as a team, experience personal and professional growth, and excel in the care of extremely sick children and their families.

  • The Pediatric Oncology Social Workers are committed to enhancing the emotional and physical well-being of children with cancer and their families. Pediatric oncology social workers are clinicians, educators, advocates, and researchers. Each family is assigned a primary social worker, an integral member of the health care team.

    The social work staff provide for the psychological, social, emotional and practical needs of patients and their families by providing:

    • An understanding of the medical, social, and family dynamics of acute and chronic catastrophic illness on the patient and family
    • Psychotherapeutic interventions including individual, group, and family treatment as well as crisis intervention
    • Knowledge of medical, social, financial, and educational resources to assist the child and their family adapt to illness/treatment
    • Education and counseling on loss and death and grief
    • Information and education regarding pediatric cancer, cancer treatment, and the late effects of treatment on survivors

    Please note that all social workers on staff have a Master’s Degree and are licensed to practice in the state of Maryland.
