We offer a full range of lactation services to support breastfeeding parents and their babies, including care and support from pregnancy through infancy and beyond.

The Sibley Lactation team is made up of International Board Certified Lactation Consultants and Breastfeeding Educators. Our staff are equipped to provide advice and support on a wide range of breastfeeding and lactation related issues.

Lactation Consultations

During your pregnancy

Appointments are available with our Lactation Consultants to prepare for breastfeeding. We offer prenatal breastfeeding education classes through our Childbirth Education Department.

While you are at Sibley

Our Lactation Consultants routinely visit breastfeeding mothers in the hospital to offer any extra help with breastfeeding. Breastfeeding Educators teach a daily breastfeeding class, and are also available to assist you with selecting nursing bras and other breastfeeding supplies.

After you go home

Many parents can experience challenges with breastfeeding once they get home. An office visit with a Lactation Consultant can help address these challenges and identify solutions to help you meet your breastfeeding goals.

Office visits may be scheduled Monday through Friday. To schedule a visit, please call 202-243-2321 or email [email protected].

As a courtesy, Sibley will submit a claim to your insurance. It is up to you to determine if your insurance covers a lactation consultation. You may want to call your insurance company to determine what is required before your appointment. If the consultation is not a covered benefit, we will bill you.

Retail Items and Breast Pump Rental

While at Sibley, you may need to use a breast pump. Medela Symphony double-electric hospital-grade pumps are available for use during your stay. Our staff can assist you in learning how to operate the pump.

Should you want to use a pump at home, we sell and rent Medela breast pumps. Our staff can assist you in determining the best breast pump for your needs.

Insurance companies have some variation in co-pays. Check with your insurance company to determine what pump is covered. Some carriers also have contracts with companies who rent equipment. If you are interested in obtaining a breast pump through your insurance, Johns Hopkins Care at Home, our on-site equipment provider, may be able to assist you. Please note that not all insurance plans participate with Johns Hopkins Care at Home; we encourage you to contact your insurance company to inquire about your plan’s coverage for breast pump purchases and rentals.

We also sell nursing bras and breastfeeding supplies on an outpatient basis.

Returning a rental breast pump

If you have rented a Symphony breast pump from Sibley, return it to Front Desk (information/security desk) in Building B, first floor. When you return the pump, please obtain the signed receipt to document that your rental is complete. Pumps can be returned at any time of day, any day of the week.

Arrangements can also be made to return the equipment by courier for a fee. Please contact the Lactation Services Department for details.

Lactation Support Group

This is an informal way for parents to meet each other, compare notes and ask questions. The group is facilitated by an IBCLC (International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants) certified consultant and babies are welcome! This is a great way for new parents to support each other. To sign up please email [email protected] using the subject line “Add me to the list” to receive the Zoom link & password.
