Birthing/Breastfeeding Classes at The Johns Hopkins Hospital

COVID-19 Update

February 1, 2023: In person classes will now be offered for Childbirth Education, with one virtual class offered each month. In person tours will be resuming in March. At this time all breastfeeding classes will remain virtual. Please refer to registration page for dates and times. For all zoom classes, information will be emailed to you 24 hours before class. Please check spam/junk folders.

Classes

Online Childbirth Education

Childbirth Education Class ($140 per family)– A 2.5-hour class, limited to 5 families. This small group setting allows you and your partner to ask any questions in a safe environment. Topics covered include breathing and relaxation techniques, labor stages, comfort options, physical and psychological changes after delivery, and coaching tips for your birth partner. Learners will also see many of the items we use during delivery to allow you to become comfortable with your labor and delivery experience. You will also receive online and paper resources to review at your convenience during this exciting time. At least two in person and one virtual class will be offered each month. ***In person classes will include a tour of the unit.

*** Please note: All Attendees must bring a valid state or federal photo ID. Attendees can park in Orleans Garage and will meet at the Zayed 8 Security Desk, 5 minutes prior to start time. Please download the Hopkins “Find Your Way” app to help with driving and walking directions.

Registration and payment are now online if you would like to pay by credit card or check. Please click here for more information regarding dates and times. You will receive a certificate of completion to submit to insurance for re-imbursement if needed. Please allow 1 week for delivery via email.

eClass ($50)– An online childbirth class ideal for those expectant parents who would prefer to work at their own pace. The eight-chapter program is an interactive, web-based class that uses videos, personal birth stories, animations, activities, and games to teach all of the essential information parents need to know to prepare for their birth. Your eClass registration includes online access for 9 months. Our online childbirth class will help you:

  • Understand pregnancy: What's happening to your body, discomforts, warning signs, nutrition, exercise and more
  • Learn about labor: Preparing for birth, pre-labor signs, onset of labor, 3D animation of labor process and more
  • See how the stages of labor unfold: Watch amazing real-life birth stories
  • Discover helpful comfort techniques: Breathing, relaxation, massage, visualization, focal points, hydrotherapy, labor and pushing positions, advice for partners and more
  • Learn about the Hopkins unit: Information about our rooms, services, parking, visitor policies, and stay up to date on Covid-19 policies and procedure changes.

Individual Consultations

Individual Consultations ($200 per couple) – This program offers all of the education covered in our Childbirth Education class and a personal tour of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Birthing Center, with one of our Childbirth Educators. Your educator will reach out prior, to prepare a class that meets your family’s individual needs. It is not necessary to register for a unit tour as it is already included with your session. *** Private lessons can be in person or virtual.

Tours 

  • In PersonTour: Returning in March!
    In person tours will be offered in small groups (3 expecting Mothers and one partner). Tours will last 45 minutes and will be with a labor nurse.

  • Virtual Tour: (Free!) – A free, virtual tour of our Birthing Center is accessible via YouTube. Watch our video tour at your convenience at this link.

Breastfeeding Classes and Support Groups

Zayed Small Group Breastfeeding Class

Offered on the first Saturday of the month from 9:00am -10:30am and the third Sunday of the month from 1:00pm - 2:30 pm via Zoom. These classes are intended for pregnant persons and one support person. Topics include deciding to breastfeed, getting ready to breastfeed and preparing the entire family for the breastfeeding experience. Please do not register for both this small group setting as well as the one-hour class. 

Cost: $50.00 per couple

The Lactation Meet-Up Support Group

  • This service is free and offers support to breastfeeding patients and NURSING BABIES! All are welcome, registration is not required.
  • Every Thursday morning via Zoom from 10:00am to 12:00pm.
  • Please note, there will be no Support Group held on any holiday.
  • Email [email protected] to request the Zoom link from out Lactation Consultant team.

JHOC Open Community Breastfeeding Class

  • Free, 60-minute class, offered once monthly via Zoom designed as a lunch and learn for the community as well as the employees of Johns Hopkins. 
  • This is a compressed version of the small group classes, without videos, models, or extended discussion.
  • Classes intended for the pregnant person and one support person.
  • Topics include deciding to breastfeed, getting ready to breastfeed and preparing the entire family for the breastfeeding experience.

Birthing Companions/Doula Support
