Resident Testimonials

Ramzi DudumRamzi Dudum, MD

Intern, Longcope Firm

"My first 'this is where I belong experience' happened during the interview breakfast where our program director, Sanjay, came up to me and greeted me as if he already knew me. It turned out he did know me—and every other applicant there. He spent time learning about us through our applications and then checked in with each of us throughout the interview day to see how our day was going. This was just the first experience of the culture that is the Osler Medical Residency Training Program—a family that supports and cares for one another. The next moment came on the “O” (Osler Medical Service) when I rounded with the team and observed our bedside rounds. The intern sat on the patient’s bed and she told her story with such care, paying special attention to the vulnerable position she was in. After the history was done, the Assistant Chief of Service asked permission to lead the team through a physical exam focused on her ailment and proceeded to demonstrate the nuances of the physical exam. We then left to look at the objective data outside (labs, imaging, etc…) and had a mini presentation on the disease process by the Senior Assistant Resident. After that experience, I remember thinking that I would be an incredible physician if I trained here. Although my first thoughts about Johns Hopkins related to it being a top-tier academic medical center with abundant research opportunities and cutting edge science, my final thoughts (and the ones I keep coming back to) relate to the people, the family, and the culture here. It truly is a special place.”

"When looking for residency programs, I wanted a balance of strong clinical work, a focus on vulnerable populations, and an emphasis on friendly and supportive co-workers. I am interested in primary care and more specifically in jail and prison health care and reform. I chose the Urban Health Program at Johns Hopkins so I could feel confident in my clinical skills and also develop leadership skills, explore policy electives, delve into the social determinants of health and work directly in the community. I have had the opportunity to work in the local jail, spend time at the health department and methadone/buprenorphine clinics and observe 'violence interrupters' mediate conflict on street corners. I have truly enjoyed working with patients in the hospital, in clinic, and throughout the city, and wonderful co-residents make the experience even better. I wanted to do residency in a city that I could enjoy even after training. My husband and I lived in Baltimore previously, so I already knew I really liked the city. We have loved coming back here and plan to stay in Baltimore after residency. Baltimore has such a variety of neighborhoods to chose from--all with inviting neighbors, great restaurants, an abundance of local bars, and plenty of activities to explore in and around the city. Baltimore also has a lot of challenges with poverty and inequality, which brings the opportunity to try and effect change among our patients and advocate for them. Being both a tertiary care center and the go-to hospital for the East Baltimore community, we see such a variety of patients and range of pathology."

"I have grown both as a clinician and as a leader during my time in the Osler Medical Residency Program. The accessibility of faculty mentors creates a collegial environment for learning. The firm system allows for longitudinal feedback from the co-residents and attendings who know you best. The endless support in this program is balanced with a level of autonomy that pushes you to remain levelheaded and caring even in the most challenging of situations. A powerful mission of the Johns Hopkins Hospital is the goal of improving patient safety. As a member of the Patient Safety Quality Improvement Pathway, I have had the opportunity to engage leadership in hospital-wide discussions to eliminate preventable harms. I have learned the skills for designing quality improvement projects from courses at the Armstrong Institute, and I have had the opportunity to implement my own quality improvement project with the support of my department’s leadership. This residency program continues to shape me into a better clinician and has provided me with the resources to design a career path for future work in quality improvement."

"You will find that the Osler Medical Residency Program is unique for many reasons. My two favorite aspects are (1) the firm system because of the responsibility it gives to each intern and senior resident on the team, and (2) the opportunities to explore global health research. On the firms, each intern takes the primary responsibility in admitting and presenting new patients at the bedside where further examination is used to enhance learning. At the end of the presentation, the senior resident, in the role of teacher, guides the interns in formulating the patient and teaching on a disease process unique to that patient. The opportunity to grow through the initial role of doctor and then solidify my medical knowledge through the role of teacher is what has transformed me from a medical student to a competent physician, teacher, and team leader. I have also taken on the role of a researcher through a project in Kampala, Uganda. There I explored my interest in global oncology by working with a research team studying Hepatocellular Carcinoma. I am grateful to the Hopkins connections, schedule flexibility, and funding that made this two-month abroad experience possible, and look forward to continuing this work that has helped to further focus my career goals. Overall, I recommend the Osler Medical Residency to any eager-to-learn medical student who desires a program that produces competent physicians, capable teachers & leaders, and critical thinkers."
