Charges and Fee Schedule Information
The following fee schedules reflect charges for items and services provided by Johns Hopkins Medicine hospitals as of July 1, 2018. This type of file is commonly called a hospital’s “chargemaster.” In Maryland, the average rates for hospital services — radiology, laboratory, intensive care stay — are regulated by the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission (HSCRC), a state regulatory agency. The HSCRC sets average hospital rates semiannually, on Jan. 1 and July 1 every year, to coincide with hospital rate setting. Hospital charges do not include fees for physician services, commonly referred to as professional fees, which are separate from the hospital bill.
Although the state of Maryland sets hospital rates twice each year, hospital charges are allowed to fluctuate, and detailed charges for items may be different from the average approved rates that cover a larger group of services. So, charges on bills for Maryland hospitals may be different from the charges in the following fee schedules. This is both allowable and normal, as hospitals adjust charges frequently to comply with other regulations. The Johns Hopkins Hospital and other Maryland hospitals believe it is impractical to update posted charges more than twice per year.
Hospitals outside the state of Maryland are not restricted by regulation in setting their charges. These hospitals use market available information and competitive pricing tools to set rates for services.
The use of the charge master information is not a practical method to estimate the cost of healthcare services. Patients are encouraged to contact Johns Hopkins Patient Financial Services at 855-665-3017 and speak with financial counselors who are trained to provide more accurate estimates of health services.
