Johns Hopkins Diversity Council Named One of 25 Best in the US

October 5, 2013

The Johns Hopkins Bayview Diversity Council was honored by the Association of Diversity Councils as one of the top 25 diversity councils in the United States for a second consecutive year. This year, the council ranked thirteenth, improving their standings from the previous year. The 2012 Top 25 Diversity Council Honors AwardTM recognizes groups that lead diversity processes in their organizations and demonstrate results in their workforce, workplace and marketplace.

"I am proud that the Diversity Council was honored at a national level. It reinforces that the work and impact of the council is meaningful and important," says Richard Bennett, M.D., president of Johns Hopkins Bayview and co-chair of its Diversity Council. "It's an honor to receive this award and be part of a group of well-respected companies who share a vision of diversity, inclusion, tolerance and civility."

Applications were submitted by council groups and evaluated on contributions and achievements in four categories: Demonstrated Council Results; Demonstrated Management Commitment; Measurement and Accountability; and Communication and Education.

"This honor results from a rigorous benchmarking process to evaluate the organization's operational practices and establish that a commitment to diversity and inclusion is present throughout our campus," said Janet J. Harding, coordinator of diversity and inclusion programs. "It also encourages us to develop processes and tools to monitor our own internal progress."

The recipients include corporations, governmental agencies, the military and higher education institutions. Joining Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center on the list of top 25 diversity councils are AT&T, FedEx Freight, Hyatt Hotels and The Boeing Company, to name a few.

The Johns Hopkins Bayview Diversity Council serves as an advisory group to the Medical Center leadership and works across departments and specialties to create strategies to foster cultural competence, civility, respect and collegiality, robust and diverse talent pools, leadership development, and mutually beneficial relationships with the community.

Some of the Council’s projects include educational workshops, internal (employee) and external Web sites, leadership and management development programs, and a Summer Scholars program that exposes students to careers in health care. The Council helps organize a Disabilities Awareness Expo at the Medical Center and a day of job training and shadowing for people with disabilities.

By integrating diversity and inclusion into the culture and operations of the Medical Center, the Council stimulates a welcoming, healing environment to meet the diverse needs of its community and provides safe, high quality health care for all patients.
