Harbor Hospital Teaching Rounds

Background

Harbor Hospital is a 177-bed community hospital located just south of Baltimore, about 15 minutes from Hopkins. They have an ACGME approved residency program in Internal Medicine. In 1997, an agreement was reached between Harbor and Hopkins that provides education for the Harbor residents and students, and a teaching opportunity for the GIM fellows. This agreement also generates funds for the fellows ($500 per 4 weeks) and for the division. This agreement resurrected one that had been active in the 1980’s.

Expectations for GIM Fellows

Currently, each GIM fellow is expected to lead attending rounds at Harbor Hospital each year. The 1st year fellows usually cover 2 weeks, and the 2nd and 3rd year fellows 4 weeks each. There are no patient responsibilities, as every patient has an attending of record responsible for their clinical care. Attending rounds are expected to be held 3 days a week (usually Mon., Wed., and Fri.) from 11-12. However, the days and times may be flexible and can be worked out with the team. The medical teams usually consist of a team leader (2nd or 3rd year resident), 1-2 interns (or 1 intern and 1 extern), a subintern and several 3rd year medical students. The fellows are responsible for evaluating the housestaff and students from the month. In turn, the housestaff and students will evaluate the fellow.
