Background

Craig Hales, MD, MPH is board certified in preventive medicine and is a diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. In his clinical practice at the Johns Hopkins Healthful Eating, Activity & Weight Program, he works with patients to develop individualized weight management plans that combine dietary changes, physical activity, and medications, while also addressing mental health issues and barriers to weight loss.  He strives to develop long term relationships with patients to support weight maintenance in a comfortable and friendly environment.

Dr. Hales is also a medical epidemiologist with the National Center for Health Statistics at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  He works with data from the National Health and Nutrition and Examination Survey (NHANES) to monitor the prevalence of obesity and obesity-related conditions among the U.S. population, including differences by race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and urbanization of place of residence.  Other research interests include methods for measurement of weight status among children and adolescents with obesity using CDC growth charts, and using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) for measuring body composition.

Dr. Hales received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Northwestern University and he earned his Master of Public Health degree and completed his preventive medicine residency training at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
