Health Sciences Informatics Research Training Program

General Internal Medicine fellows who have academic interests in informatics research will have the opportunity to work with faculty in the Health Sciences Informatics Research Training program. One of 18 NLM-funded programs around the country, the HSI program aims to provide academic clinicians (and others) the knowledge and skills to be independent researchers in the application of informatics principles and technology to general internal medicine and other specialties. Either a fellowship or formal masters program (Masters of Sciences in Health Sciences Research) is available. The program comprises didactic courses, informatics practica, and mentored research. Types of projects may include, for example:

  • Design or evaluation of decision support systems to improve patient safety
  • Design or evaluation of information systems for the provision of care to the medically underserved
  • Design or evaluation of information systems to improve adherence to evidence-based clinical practice guidelines
  • Design or evaluation of information systems to improve physician education at the point of care
  • Design or evaluation of simulation environments to improve physician education
  • Design or evaluation of vocabularies to foster better data capture in clinical care or research
  • Participation of efforts to unite patients’ data over large regions

Applicants interested in the Informatics Research Track should specify this interest in the cover letter of the application for the General Internal Medicine Fellowship and should consider applying separately to the HSI program (application due Feb 15) for joint consideration.
