Outpatient psychiatric services for children, adolescents, and young adults are offered on two campuses, the Johns Hopkins Hospital - Broadway Campus and the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Specialty clinics as well as community outreach programs cover a broad range of conditions and modes of treatment.

The Johns Hopkins Hospital – Broadway Campus

We offer comprehensive outpatient clinical care for a range of conditions provided by psychiatrist and psychologists. Our individual programs are organized around themes that reflect the expertise of our faculty. Each program offers a team of professionals collaborating to meet the comprehensive evaluation and treatment needs of children and their families. Services may include parent education and support, medication management, psychotherapy, school advocacy, and psychological testing and assessment. Faculty are also available for second opinion or one-time consultation to families and clinicians. Through a centralized intake process, services are streamlined to optimally fit the individual child's and family's needs.

ADHD/Behavioral Disorders Program

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood disorder that affects behavior at home, at school, and with peers. Clinical skills, familiarity with normal development, and rigorous application of diagnostic criteria are essential to making an accurate diagnosis and determining treatment options. Our program uses both direct clinical assessment and psychological testing to evaluate each child. Symptoms may include:

• Off task with assignments
• Doesn't seem to listen
• 'On the go' all the time
• Often fidgety or physically restless
• Difficulty waiting for his/her turn

The program offers specialized services that include medication management, parent training sessions with extensive support and guidance, behavioral interventions for youngsters, and school consultation. Each family is offered the combination of services that are most appropriate for their child.

Anxiety Disorders Program

Anxiety in children is common and eight to ten percent of children suffer from anxiety disorders. Symptoms may include:

• Reluctance to attend school of camp or sleepovers
• Fears of being separated from parents for even short periods of time
• Shyness that interferes with making friends or participating in activities
• excessive worries and need for reassurance
• Aches and pains

There are a number of treatments that are effective in helping youngsters with these problems. Early diagnosis and intervention can bring much needed relief to everyone in the family. Our program offers a through assessment with diagnostic clarification, individual and family work that includes cognitive behavioral therapy, and pharmacological intervention when indicated. Psychiatrists and psychologists work together to provide this coordinated care.

Your initial appointment will be 2-3 hours and will include an extensive clinical interview with feedback. You may be asked to complete several questionnaires about your child’s symptoms. For children with possible selective mutism, parents will be asked to bring an audio or video recording of the child’s speech, if possible.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders Program

Although Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can often appear in childhood --- one in about 200 youngsters have OCD --- few receive developmentally appropriate treatment. Children may not reveal the degree of symptoms initially until their progression begins to impact daily life for the child and the entire family. Children, teens, and families often suffer despite the availability of safe and effective treatments. Symptoms may include:

• Persistent concerns about germs despite reassurances
• The need to repeatedly count steps or touch objects to feel 'just right'
• Wants object lined up a certain way leading to distress if they are moved

Treatment through this outpatient program emphasizes careful diagnostic review of symptoms and course, coupled with intensive treatment that includes both cognitive-behavioral work for the child and the family and medication management that specifically targets these symptoms.
