Rehabilitation Telehealth and Video Visits FAQs
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Johns Hopkins Rehabilitation Network has developed and deployed a video-based telehealth solution to adhere to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state mandated guidelines. Our goal is to empower our patients by providing the tools needed to get them back to the activities most important to them. The following are some frequently asked questions to help you schedule and prepare for a telehealth appointment.
Which Johns Hopkins therapy services are currently available through telemedicine?
At this time, many patients seeking physical therapy, occupational therapy or speech-language therapy can receive remote, safe, highly accessible care in the comfort of their home. Nearly any rehabilitation treatment can be performed through video visits, including postoperative care, chronic pain management, care for orthopaedic conditions, woman’s health care, treatment for neurological conditions and many other services. During your initial appointment, a rehabilitation therapist will evaluate your condition and determine if you could benefit more from an in-office treatment or can continue with telemedicine.
How do I prepare for my rehabilitation therapy video session?
Find the right space
Find a private place in your home that is free from distractions and that has sufficient lighting and low noise levels. Your televisit may require the use of some equipment, and you may need an exercise mat or a space to lay down during the session. Your therapist will let you know before your video visit what equipment you might need. We recommended at least 6 feet of space between your computer/smartphone and your exercise mat. Your therapist will need to see you from head to toe during your visit to properly observe your movement patterns.
Choose comfortable clothing
Dress as if you’re going to the gym. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely and doesn’t restrict your movement during stretching or strengthening exercises. Be sure to wear comfortable and supportive athletic shoes as well.
Get your equipment ready
Patients need a camera-equipped personal computer (desktop or laptop) or a smart mobile device (tablet, iPad or smartphone). It is helpful to have an exercise mat, a chair and any exercise equipment you have available with you during the video visit, so your therapist can help you use them throughout the session.
How long will my appointment be?
New patient and follow-up telehealth appointments are generally the same length as in-person appointments and may last up to 60 minutes.
How do I schedule a video visit?
New patients, please call our access center at 443-997-5476 to schedule a telehealth appointment today. If you have a MyChart account and have seen us before, you can also request a video visit online.
Will my insurance cover telemedicine visits?
We verify insurance benefits for each patient and determine preauthorization requirements. When authorization is successfully obtained, our staff reviews the information with you to set expectations for care. We encourage you to contact your insurance company if you have more questions about your benefits and coverage.
