February Is Heart Month—Meet Suburban Hospital’s Heart Experts

Bethesda, MD -- February is American Heart Month, which was established to bring attention to the nation’s number one killer, heart disease. Suburban Hospital, a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine, located in Bethesda, Maryland, has several cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery experts who can share their expertise.

CARDIOLOGY EXPERTS

  • Harry Bigham, MD, FACC, is the regional medical director, and a cardiologist with Johns Hopkins Community Physicians-Heart Care (JHCP) in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Bigham is affiliated with Suburban Hospital and Sibley Memorial Hospital. Dr. Bigham received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed his fellowship in cardiology and interventional cardiology at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Bigham is board certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology. His special interests include general and preventive cardiology, and interventional cardiology. 
     
  • Virginia Colliver, MD, FACC, is the medical director, and a cardiologist with Johns Hopkins Community Physicians-Heart Care (JHCP) in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Colliver is also affiliated with Suburban Hospital and Sibley Memorial Hospital. She is board-certified in cardiovascular disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Colliver has expertise in general and preventive cardiology, heart disease in women, echocardiography and nuclear cardiology. 

    Dr. Colliver earned her medical degree from the University of Maryland  School of Medicine. She completed a residency at University of North Carolina, as well as a fellowship in cardiovascular medicine. Dr. Colliver is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Colliver received the 2017 Johns Hopkins Medicine Excellence in Service and Professionalism Award for providing great care to her patients and leadership to her JHCP office. 
     
  • Daniel Fernicola, MD, FACC, is the office medical director, and a cardiologist at Johns Hopkins Community Physicians - Heart Care (JHCP) in Rockville, Maryland. Dr. Fernicola has privileges as a cardiologist at Suburban Hospital. He is board-certified in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Fernicola has expertise in cardiac imaging, cardiovascular disease, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology and preventive cardiology. 

    Dr. Fernicola earned his medical degree from Georgetown University and completed an internal medicine residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He was a staff fellow in the Pathology Branch of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health prior to completing a fellowship in cardiology with Georgetown University School of Medicine at Washington Veterans Affairs Hospital, where he went on to serve as director of echocardiography and nuclear cardiology. 

    Dr. Fernicola also previously served in the U.S. Public Health Service and as an assistant professor of medicine in the Department of Cardiology at Georgetown University. Dr. Fernicola is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the American College of Physicians. 
     
  • Edward Healy, MD, FACC, is a cardiologist with Johns Hopkins Community Physicians-Heart Care (JHCP) in Bethesda, Maryland and chairman of cardiology at Suburban Hospital, where he developed the full-service electrophysiology lab, bringing advanced cardiac rhythm devices and radiofrequency ablation to the hospital. Dr. Healy also has privileges at Sibley Memorial Hospital. He is board-certified in cardiovascular disease and clinical cardiac electrophysiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. 

    Dr. Healy has expertise in cardiac electrophysiology, cardiovascular disease, echocardiography and nuclear cardiology. He also has expertise in radiofrequency ablation, and performed the first ablation at Suburban Hospital. Dr. Healy earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Tufts Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in cardiology and clinical cardiac electrophysiology at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. 

    Dr. Healy is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Heart Rhythm Society. Dr. Healy has participated in numerous research initiatives with an interest in arrhythmias, pacing and defibrillators. He has served as a site investigator and principal investigator for clinical trials. 
     
  • Greg Kumkumian, MD, FACC, is currently the medical director in the cardiac catheterization laboratory at Suburban Hospital. Dr. Kumkumian received his medical degree from The George Washington University School of Medicine. He is board-certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology. His special interests include general and preventive cardiology, interventional cardiology and peripheral vascular diseases, venous diseases and peripheral interventions.
     
  • Alan Schneider, MD, FACC, received his medical degree from the University of Maryland  School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine and was chief resident in internal medicine at the University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore. He then completed fellowships in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology at the University of Maryland Hospital. Dr. Schneider is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and clinical cardiac electrophysiology. His special interest is the surgical and medical management of cardiac arrhythmias.

CARDIOTHORACIC SURGERY EXPERTS

  • Thomas Matthew, MD, is the director of Johns Hopkins Cardiothoracic Surgery at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. He is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Matthew has an expertise in cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery and vascular surgery. He has surgical interests in complex coronary artery surgical revascularization, mitral valve repair, reparative cardiac surgery and aortic valve replacement including the TAVR procedure. 

    Dr. Matthew earned his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, followed by a master of science degree in surgical research from the University of Virginia. He completed a general surgery internship and residency at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center, where he served as chief resident and also completed a residency in thoracic-cardiovascular surgery.

    Dr. Matthew was also a research fellow, part of the National Science Foundation Fellowship at University of Virginia Health Sciences Center, sponsored by the Ford Foundation. During this research fellowship, he studied the use of Albumin micro bubbles and echocardiography during open heart operations to measure myocardial perfusion. Dr. Matthew is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology. He is a member of the National Medical Association and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. 
     
  • Philip Corcoran, MD, is a surgeon at Johns Hopkins Community Physicians (JHCP). He specializes in cardiovascular surgery and thoracic surgery. Dr. Corcoran practices at the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Clinic at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Corcoran completed his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and his surgery residency at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. Dr. Corcoran is board-certified in surgery and thoracic surgery. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
     
  • Michael Siegenthaler, MD, is a surgeon at Johns Hopkins Community Physicians (JHCP). He specializes in cardiac surgery. Dr. Siegenthaler operates a clinical practice out of the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Clinic at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland.

    Dr. Siegenthaler completed his fellowship in vascular and endovascular surgery at Albert-Ludwigs Universitaet Freiburg in Freiburg in Breisgau, Germany. He also completed residencies in surgery at University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Connecticut, and thoracic surgery at Texas Heart Institute at St Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston, Texas. He received his medical degree from University of Bern in Bern, Switzerland. Dr. Siegenthaler is board certified in surgery and thoracic surgery. He is fluent in English, Italian, Spanish, French and German.
