Health Insurance and Billing

At Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, we understand that your child’s hospital visit may be a stressful time for you, especially if you are worried about medical bills. Our financial team can help you understand the billing and insurance process, and we will do our best to maximize your insurance benefits. If you are unable to pay all or part of your child’s bill, our financial counselors can help you apply for financial assistance.

Pediatric Admitting Office

Please be sure to visit the Pediatric Admitting Office to verify your insurance information and sign the appropriate forms. It is your responsibility to keep the Admitting Office updated with any changes that could affect billing. The Pediatric Admitting Office, Room 131, is located on the first floor of Johns Hopkins Children’s Center between the visitors’ elevators and the Pediatric Emergency Department. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (on weekends, holidays and after-hours, the Pediatric Emergency Department is staffed to assist you). If you cannot visit the Pediatric Admitting Office, please call 410-955-8756 (58756 inside the hospital) and we will come to you.

Types of Bills

Johns Hopkins Children’s Center issues separate bills for hospital services and professional services. Your child’s hospital bill includes charges for your room, food, medical supplies and any tests or procedures performed. You may also receive additional bills from the Johns Hopkins University Clinical Practice Association for physician services.

Paperless Billing

Johns Hopkins Medicine is excited to offer paperless billing in MyChart, allowing you to access your statements electronically by logging into your account.

Insurance and Your Financial Responsibility

Our Patient Financial Services Department will file your claim directly with your primary and secondary health insurance providers. We recommend that you verify your benefits and coverage with your insurance company. We will make every reasonable effort to collect from your insurance company. If your insurance company or carrier fails to pay, or pays only a portion of the bill, you are responsible for the balance. If you have not received a notice of payment from your insurer within 60 days of receiving a copy of your bills, we recommend that you contact the insurer.

If you have a question about your bill, please call billing customer service toll-free at 1-855-662-3017.

Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

For children of parents who work but have no insurance, most states offer the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), a free, federally funded medical insurance program. For more information, contact the Medicaid Advocacy Unit at 410-955-6745 (56745 inside the hospital). The unit is in Nelson 161 and can assist you Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Financial Counselors

Our financial counselors can help if you have questions or concerns about paying your medical bills. Please talk to the counselors assigned to you or contact the financial counseling office at 410-955-6055 (56055 inside the hospital). They are available Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Cashiers

Cashiers are located within the hospital’s main admitting office, near the Wolfe Street entrance of the hospital. The cashiers accept payment for hospital and physician services in the form of cash, personal check, travelers checks, money orders and most credit cards. Discounted parking coupon books are also available at this location. Services are available Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
