Jeremy Walston, M.D., was a compassionate physician, an outstanding researcher and a collaborator who spent his career in the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology working tirelessly to build programs to improve the lives of older adults. A pioneer in the field of aging biology and frailty, he co-directed the Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center and the Artificial Intelligence and Technology Collaboratory, and created and led the Human Aging Project with generous support from the Center for Innovative Medicine. He also helped build the Clin-STAR network to expand support for clinician-scientists focusing on aging research through the U.S. He loved his work and the communities it built. His legacy lives on through his research projects and the many people he mentored at Johns Hopkins and elsewhere, as well as through his beloved family and friends.

Jeremy Walston, M.D., Endowed Scholar in Aging and Geriatric Medicine Fund

In honor of our cherished faculty member and friend, the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology is partnering with Dr. Walston’s family to create a tribute that honors his legacy and his passion in caring for older adults.

A stellar mentor, Dr. Walston believed in bringing people together from many different disciplines and supporting the next generation of scholars in the field of aging. His work was always grounded in the principles of caring and equitable access to scientific and medical advances. The programs Dr. Walston built, centered in the foundation of the Human Aging Project, envision a world in which all older adults are able to live long, healthy and meaningful lives; age-related functional and cognitive decline are minimized; and personal independence is increasingly the norm. Our Human Aging Project scholars are crucial to the success of this mission and vision. The HAP Scholars program facilitates basic biologists, engineers, clinicians and translational investigators to develop and implement novel diagnostics, treatments or preventive strategies for all older adults, providing interdisciplinary resources for important scientific discoveries, and their translation and dissemination.

The Jeremy Walston, M.D., Endowed Scholar in Aging and Geriatric Medicine Fund builds on this legacy by creating a fund to support new scholars that will last in perpetuity. The fund will support an assistant professor for up to three years as they grow their scientific research in the field of geriatric medicine and gerontology. The junior faculty recipient will demonstrate a commitment to pursuing research that can be translated from the biology of aging to clinical practice and to helping older adults and caregivers in the community.
