This award is intended to recognize outstanding achievement in teaching, which the IEE defines as direct contact time with learners in a large group, small group or one-on-one, whether in the classroom, lab or clinical setting.

Sujay Pathak, MD, holds dual roles with Johns Hopkins Community Physicians as a primary care provider, and with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, as director of the Advanced Ambulatory Clerkship.  This position places him squarely at the intersection of primary care theory and practice.  He brings both the theoretical expertise and the immense clinical resources of Johns Hopkins Medicine to the clinical care of individuals from all walks of life.

The Professors' Award for Excellence in Teaching was established in 1981 by the Advisory Board of the Medical Faculty and is intended to honor each year members of the faculty whose teaching is judged to have had a profound effect on students in the School of Medicine.

The Distinguished Teaching Society of the JHUSOM

Congratulations to Dr. McDermeit
The Distinguished Teaching Society of JHUSOM exists to recognize, encourage, and support the educational activities, scholarly initiatives, and career objectives of master clinical educators who teach medical students. The Distinguished Teaching Society of JHUSOM honors house staff and faculty educators who demonstrate excellence in teaching. Finalists, based on student nominations, will be invited to complete a brief application. A committee of student judges will then use a student-created and evidence-based "Esteemable Educator Rubric" to determine the final inductees.

Congratulations, Dr. Newman!

Kudos and congratulations to Dr. Mary M. Newman, who was recognized as the 2020–2021 Outstanding Volunteer Clinical Teacher by the American College of Physicians. This prestigious national award honors individuals for outstanding, sustained voluntary service in the education of medical students and residents. As a recipient of this award Dr. Newman “demonstrated outstanding teaching prowess, displayed exemplary characteristics of care and concern for individual patients at the bedside, and served as a role model and mentor.”

Dr. Newman has taught hundreds of students and residents during her career, participating as faculty in the Basic Medical Clerkship, the Longitudinal Ambulatory clerkship, and others. In learner evaluations she is consistently top ranked for knowledge, diagnostic insights, and clinical management skills. She is a member of the Thayer firm, and is highly sought after as a teaching attending. In addition to her work with Hopkins students, she has worked broadly with learners across the state and nation during her work with the American College of Physicians. During her term as the Governor of the Maryland ACP, she collaborated with student members to start the highly competitive Health Policy Externship for students and residents at the ACP Washington Office. She continues to provide Hopkins learners the important and unusual perspectives of a physician who has dedicated years to professional service, political advocacy, and improving the practice of primary care.

Dr. Newman maintains an important role in educating the community of practicing physicians in addition to her roles in undergraduate and graduate medical education. She lectures nationally on women’s health, primary care, and chronic care management. She is a doctor’s doctor, and cares for the families of many Hopkins faculty as well as the families of other physicians. Very importantly, she has helped to shape the professional practice of medicine at a national level, through her work in numerous professional committees and taskforces over the years. In addition to her active medical practice, she is President of Park Medical Associates, and she serves as a member of the Part-time Faculty Advisory Committee and the Johns Hopkins Green Spring Board of Governors. In addition to her work in the ACP, she is a longstanding member of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland, the Maryland Governor's Council, and numerous professional organizations. She has served tirelessly on numerous panels and committees to improve the practice of medicine. As an educator, Dr. Newman been instrumental in ensuring that our residents and students receive the clinical knowledge that will make them caring and insightful physicians.

Dr. Dlhosh was awarded The Professors' Awards for Excellence in Teaching at the School of Medicine Convocation Ceremony, on Wednesday, May 22 in the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.

The IEE offers peer nominated and peer reviewed awards to recognize outstanding achievement in education. Awards are given at the annual IEE Education Conference and Celebration. Dr. Tina Kumra received the IEE Part-Time Faculty Teaching Award April 2019.

Congratulations, Dr. Dahlman!

Dr. Holly Ryerson Dahlman, was awarded the 2019 Samuel P Asper Award for excellence in Internal Medicine. Dr. Holly Ryerson Dahlman was the 2019 recipient of the Samuel P Asper Award. This peer-reviewed award is granted by the Maryland Chapter of the American College of Physicians for excellence in internal medicine. Dr. Dahlman is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and serves on the Health Policy Committee. She is a member of the Johns Hopkins Part-time Faculty Advisory Committee and teaches in the Advanced Ambulatory Clerkship. Her focus is primary care delivery innovation, and her practice has won three national awards for EHR innovations to improve hypertension control. Dr. Dahlman has presented at the eClinicalWorks National Users Conference and conducted a national webinar for Million Hearts through the CDC and CMS Innovations Center. She is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and trained on the Osler Medical Housestaff before going into full time clinical practice.

Congratulations, Dr. Fine!

Congratulations to Dr. Ira Fine for being honored with the Professor’s Award for Teaching by a Member of the Part-time Faculty at the School of Medicine’s Graduation Ceremony in May 2018. Dr. Fine has been a faculty member in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Division of Rheumatology for more than 25 years. In this role he has taught generations of medical students, residents, and fellows. His contributions to the missions of teaching, research, and patient care at Hopkins have been substantial. One of his many contributions is the Dr. Ira T. Fine Discovery Fund, which sponsors innovative research to end suffering caused by arthritis and inflammatory disease. Dr. Fine is chairman of the Board of Governors at Johns Hopkins at Green Spring Station where he practices internal medicine, specializing in rheumatology. A member of numerous medical and professional organizations, Dr. Fine is also a member of the Hospital Board of Directors. He received his medical degree from the University of Maryland and completed a medical internship and residency at the University of Maryland Hospital. Dr. Fine completed a fellowship in rheumatology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Congratulations, Dr. Papel!

Dr. Ira Papel has been promoted to the academic rank of Professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Papel completed medical school at Boston University and completed a fellowship in facial and plastic surgery at Hopkins in 1987. Since completing his fellowship, Dr. Papel has maintained a busy clinical practice, first as a full-time faculty member at Johns Hopkins, and now in a private practice closely affiliated with Hopkins. Clinical investigation and reporting has been an important facet of his practice since the beginning. Dr. Papel is a past president of both the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is co-director of the JHU SOM Facial Plastic Surgery fellowship, and has been a Visiting Professor at more than 30 universities in the US and abroad. Dr. Papel has co-authored more than 100 scientific papers, proceedings reviews and book chapters, and has received numerous honors. He has contributed to the training of generations of students, and fellows during his career.

The Alpha Omega Alpha Volunteer Clinical Faculty Award is presented annually by local Chapters or Associations to recognize community physicians who have contributed with distinction to the education and training of medical students. AΩA provides a permanent plaque for each Chapter’s dean’s office; a plate with the name of each year’s honoree may be added each year that the award is given. Honorees receive a framed certificate and engraved key ring. Dr. Howard Weiss received the AΩA Volunteer Faculty Award for the Maryland Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Chapter. May 2017.
