The Academy at Johns Hopkins

The Academy at Johns Hopkins opened in early October of 2018 to provide retired Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Bloomberg School of Public Health and School of Nursing faculty members with postretirement intellectual engagement activities and to create a “brain trust” for Johns Hopkins Medicine mentoring and scholarly posterity. The university recognizes that faculty members are the lifeblood of the institution and that retirement from the institution presents an opportunity for both continued personal growth and continued contribution to the school of medicine’s mission.

The mission of The Academy at Johns Hopkins is to provide opportunities for retired faculty members from the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and Bloomberg School of Public Health to stay intellectually engaged, to retain collegial relationships, and to continue to serve in the intellectual life of the school of medicine. Engagement opportunities include a wide variety of lectures, seminars, workshops, community engagement, and social events. Service opportunities could include, but are not limited to, mentoring and coaching, grant application and manuscript reviews, participation on research projects, nominating faculty for awards, serving on an advisory panel to the dean, and various school committees such as searches, reviews of disclosures of intellectual property, patents and clinical strategies.

Appointment of faculty members to The Academy at Johns Hopkins is honorific. All faculty applying to The Academy must submit a formal application. For our Academy Scholars, applicants are recommended by their primary departments into The Academy via a letter of support from the department director addressed to the Academy Chair and subject to approval by the dean. Academy Scholar applicants must indicate their areas of interest for engagement along with their department director’s letter of support. The nomination packet is reviewed by an admissions committee consisting of the Academy Chair and leadership at the vice dean and department director levels.
