Organizational Savvy: Tips for Career Success

In this session, faculty at all career stages will develop the “situational awareness” needed to recognize institutional strategic priorities, networks, and sources of power and influence to create opportunities for career success. Participants will define organizational savvy and understand how it can support “getting things done” in a highly complex academic environment. Participants will be able to identify sources of workplace power and influence. We will discuss ways to align professional goals with organizational priorities and leverage power and influence in service of a shared mission.

Identifying Purpose and Saying Yes or No

Tantalizing offers come along every day, but not all opportunities are equally worthwhile when you are juggling multiple time demands. Create a draft of your personal mission statement and then strategize about what projects and opportunities you should say “Yes” to and which should get a resounding “No” as you move forward in your career.

The Company You Keep: Key Professional Relationships

In this session, faculty at all career stages will consider several key professional relationships in academic medicine and discuss how these can be developed and leveraged to support career satisfaction and success. Participants will compare mentorship, coaching, sponsorship, and followership, reflecting on how and when these relationships are critical for faculty growth and achievement. We will discuss seeking out these relationships and excelling in these roles.

Negotiation Essentials

For faculty at any career stage, being able to negotiate effectively is an absolute necessity. Whether the bargaining dynamic involves salary negotiations or career trajectory, fair and effective negotiating can ensure that different interests are blended into an acceptable and hopefully favorable outcome for all parties. In this session, we discuss and practice the skills needed to optimize your negotiation for a successful career at Johns Hopkins.
