Research Training
ABIM Pathway
For applicants interested in applying to our program on the ABIM research pathway, please review our research scholars track information. One important distinction is that persons on the ABIM research pathway are ranked on a separate NRMP code 1242143F0.
Research Scholars Track
For those interested in pursuing a career as a clinician-scientist, we strongly encourage you to consider selecting our Research Scholars Track and to indicate this during your interview.
Clinical Scholars Track: Scholarly Activity
Participation in meaningful scholarly activity is an important part of fellowship training. Indeed, its importance is highlighted by the fact that the ACGME guidelines for Endocrine fellowships require fellows to engage in scholarly work. Therefore, all fellows are required to have scholarly activity projects (usually two) and to submit an abstract to a national meeting.
We find that fellows are eager to explore the field of endocrinology through scholarly work and every year we are amazed by their productivity.
Choosing a project
- For fellows who may be interested in the research scholars track, we strongly advise that they also explore other projects and mentors on our clinical research T32 site and meet with our T32 co-PI (Todd Brown, MD PhD).
- For fellows on the clinical scholars track, they can anticipate being able to devote ~ 40% of their time to a scholarly project during their second year of fellowship with the goal of submitting an abstract to a national meeting in the early winter.

- For fellows on the research scholars track, additional blocks of time for research are made available towards the end of their 2 year of fellowship and fellows may devote 50-75% of their time to research. All fellows on this track are expected to complete a 3 year fellowship. During this year we expect the fellow to devote 80% of their time to research.

Research Didactics
- Johns Hopkins Institute for Clinical & Translational Research (ICTR) offers an annual week-long Introduction to Clinical Research Summer Course, which is free for fellows.
- Foundational courses in biostatics, clinical trial design and conduct, epidemiology and other research methodology are offered with full tuition remission (16 credits maximum) for fellows at the School of Public Health.
- The School of Public Health also offers short courses through their Winter or Summer Institutes, with tuition remission for 1 non-credit course per term for fellows.
