Cardiac Imaging Services

The cardiac imaging team at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, provides expertise in performing and interpreting tests for patients of all ages, to diagnose and treat heart disease.

Why Choose Johns Hopkins All Children’s

We provide a range of cardiac imaging services, including advanced imaging methods, to diagnose your child’s heart condition or aid in surgical or treatment planning.

Our board-certified pediatric cardiologists work closely with our team of sonographers. The sonographers are highly skilled at performing echocardiograms (special ultrasounds used to take pictures of the heart). Our sonographers are specially trained in pediatric congenital heart defects.

We also provide cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) imaging, working closely with the hospital’s radiology team. For certain imaging methods that may require sedation, our pediatric cardiac anesthesia team is specially trained in providing safe sedation for children with heart conditions to keep them comfortable during their tests.

We use a number of different imaging methods. The type of imaging your child will have depends on his or her condition. Our experienced team works to select the right method for your child that will best meet his or her individual needs.

Advanced Surgical Planning

Our heart surgery and interventional cardiology teams combine their expertise with state-of-the-art technology to aid in planning for heart surgery, cardiac catheterization, and other procedures. For example, we are able to combine data from a 3D echocardiogram, cardiac MRI and cardiac CT to view a three-dimensional model of a patient’s heart, evaluate their unique heart anatomy and function and plan for heart surgery or other procedures. This platform allows us to use virtual reality to “fly through” the heart but we can also create a 3D print of the heart that you can hold in your hand.

Types of Cardiac Imaging

  • Echocardiogram, including stress echocardiogram, 3D echocardiogram, and transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE)
  • Myocardial strain imaging
  • Fetal echocardiogram
  • Cardiac MRI
  • Cardiac CT

What to Expect

Most children do not require sedation for their echocardiogram, and our team tries using age-appropriate techniques such as feeding, distraction, or watching movies to obtain the best quality images. Sometimes, however, sedation will be required. If your child requires sedation for their imaging study, we will provide you with instructions on what to do to prepare your child for anesthesia, including instructions on when to stop eating or drinking before the test. You will receive a phone call from a member of our team with these instructions.

After your child’s study, the physician who ordered the study will provide you with the test results. The time it takes to receive results may vary; your child’s care team can tell you what to expect. Your child’s results will also be available in MyChart.
