The 8-week Johns Hopkins All Children’s Summer Student Research Training Program (SSRTP), Clinical and Translational Research Pathway, develops and mentors passionate students at the undergraduate, medical school, and other graduate levels who are pursuing a career as a research professional or investigator in clinical and translational research. The program provides a mentored, hands-on research experience coupled with a structured didactic curriculum, onsite at the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital campus in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Program Description

During the Summer Student Research Training Program experience, trainees will gain an applied, hands-on, mentored experience in the conduct and/or analysis of one or more clinical or translational research studies, with potential opportunity for co-authorship on a publication, depending upon contributions to and timelines of these studies.

In addition, students will have access to a structured didactic curriculum in research and related aspects of academic medicine, consisting of:

• Multiple videotaped lectures provided by Johns Hopkins All Children’s faculty on research design, implementation, analysis, and publication
• Monthly Johns Hopkins All Children’s Seminar Series in Academia and Interdisciplinary Research Forum, held virtually

Acceptance into the program is subject to the availability of a suitable mentor, project(s), and funding, as applicable.

Requirements

• Matriculated in high school, undergraduate, medical school, or other graduate school
• Active health insurance coverage is required for all students participating onsite. Students must provide proof of active health insurance in order to complete Occupational Health clearance and be approved to participate onsite.

Expectations Upon Acceptance

• Successful completion of all Johns Hopkins Medicine Institutional Review Board-required online training for investigators and staff involved in the conduct of research involving human subjects, within one week of the start date
• Successful completion of training on, and adherence to, confidentiality and protection of personal health information, within one week of the start date
• Completion of all required Occupational Health onboarding and clearance requirements prior to participating onsite
• Maintenance of active health insurance coverage throughout the program
• Biweekly (or more frequent) meetings with the assigned mentor to review knowledge base and progress on projects

Remuneration to Participant

• No remuneration will be provided to mentees for participating in this training program.

Cost to Participant

• There will be no cost to mentees for participating in this training program.
