SOM Faculty Rank Guidelines
For all SOM faculty, doctoral degree and completion of training is required. Those without doctoral degrees require approval from the Vice Dean for Faculty and typically hold an advanced or professional degree in the field (typically the terminal degree, plus appropriate experience).
Incoming faculty are offered appointments at the rank they held at their prior institution.
Questions about which rank is appropriate for an incoming faculty member can be directed to Dr. Nauder Faraday, Sr. Associate Dean for Appointments and Promotions.
Ranks

- Primarily engaged in independent research at a faculty level who is usually directed by faculty at a higher rank (not at staff/research assistant level)
- Candidates have typically completed a postdoctoral fellowship
- Non tenure track

- Primarily engaged in teaching
- Non tenure track

- Primarily engaged in clinical work
- One of two ranks used for Advanced Specialty Trainees (ASTPs)
- Used for certain specialties (e.g. audiologists)
- Non tenure track

- Possesses the skills required for their clinical field or basic science discipline, as well as showing potential for growth in academic pursuits
- Entry level rank for someone who has completed their postdoctoral training or residency
- One of two ranks used for Advanced Specialty Trainees (ASTPs)

- Expected to demonstrate clear evidence of creative scholarship or clinical excellence in the area of their primary expertise
- Criteria expanded early 2022 to be one or more of the following:
- one first or last author peer-reviewed original research publication OR review article, book chapter, case report, etc
- one middle author publication AND 2 additional middle author publications
- one middle author publication AND 2 invited talks/CME/workshops at local, regional, or national level (excluding abstract presentations or student/resident/fellow lectures at the home department)
- one middle author publication AND one clinical or educational leadership position at local, regional, or national level
- Note about publications: must be in biomedical field, published during or after doctoral training, and easily accessible to the community
- Generally recognized within, and at times beyond, the JHUSOM as excellent researchers, educators, clinicians, or program builders, as documented by any of the following: awards or honors for research, teaching, clinical, or program development contributions; invited talks (grand rounds, keynote addresses, visiting professorships)
- Individual departments may require additional criteria
- Tenure track

- Expected to demonstrate clear evidence of independent research with a focused body of publications, national visibility of the research findings, and evidence of continuing extramural support for the research
- Usually a substantial number of publications will be necessary to be considered for rank
- Requires clear separation from mentor toward independence
- Must have achieved national recognition as excellent researchers, educators, clinicians, or program builders, as documented by any of the following: awards or honors for research, educational, clinical, or program development contributions; invited talks (grand rounds, keynote addresses, visiting professorships)
- Tenure track

- National leadership and international recognition for research entails a significant body of work with publication in high quality journals with high citation rates, service on national study sections, invited reviews in major journals, and invited presentations of the candidate’s research findings at national and international conferences
- A substantial number of peer-reviewed publications will be necessary to be considered for this rank and evidence of sustained extramural support for research is typically associated with this rank
- Must have national recognition, and in most cases international recognition, as excellent researcher, educator, clinician, or program builder, as documented by any of the following: awards or honors for research, educational, clinical, or program development contributions; invited talks (grand rounds, keynote addresses, visiting professorships)
- Person granted tenure (full time)

- Available at the ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor
- Rank will be commensurate with rank held at primary position
- Holds primary position at another institution and will have collaborative relationship with JHUSOM

- Person holds primary faculty appointment elsewhere and comes to JHUSOM for a set period of time to work (minimum of one month)
- Must be paid by JHM or home institution at JHU minimum

- Faculty holds primary appointment at another Department at the SOM
- Rank will be the same as primary appointment
- Primary department must sign off on the appointment

- Faculty holds primary appointment at another Department at the SOM or another Division of JH
- Primary department must sign off on the appointment for those holding primary appointment in the SOM
