Vivien Thomas Ph.D. Scholars
To be considered for the VTSI, all components of the Ph.D. program application, including the VTSI supplemental components, must be completed by December 1, 2025. All supplementary application material, including letters of recommendation, must also be received by December 1, 2025.

The application deadlines may be found by going to the main admissions page and selecting either on-campus or online programs. Application materials may not be submitted after the deadline.

If you have completed your degree or are currently enrolled and will receive a degree from a university within the U.S. prior to matriculation at JHU-SOM, the TOEFL/IELTS requirement will be waived. If you have any questions regarding this requirement, please contact the program to which you are applying. Contact information can be found on the Graduate Program website.

Most of the JHU School of Medicine graduate programs admit for the Fall term only. The History of Medicine Online MA and Certificate programs have rolling admissions.

Transcripts of courses you have completed and all supporting materials should be received by the application deadline. Verification that you have completed your degree, along with official transcripts will be requested from accepted applicants prior to matriculation.

Programs generally begin to review the applications as they become complete. We encourage you to submit your application and supplemental materials early – before the deadline. Each program has a different schedule for reviewing applications. You will be notified of your application decision by the program(s) to which you have applied.

The graduate program will contact the applicants directly if they are invited to interview.

Many JHU-SOM graduate programs do not require the GRE. Of the programs that require the GRE, there is no minimum score requirements.

If the application form is submitted by the application deadline, supporting documents (scores, letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc.) can follow within a week or so. Some admissions committees do begin reviewing applications immediately after the deadline, so it would be to your advantage to arrange to submit the required supporting documents by the deadline, or as soon as they become available. In the case of GRE scores, it takes JHU-SOM approximately 10 days to receive the scores once you have taken the exam. Scores are received from ETS electronically, but it is helpful to the admissions committee if you can self-report your available scores, on the application form.

There is no minimum TOEFL score requirement.

Sealed official copies of your transcripts are not required for application; scanned copies of an original transcript or university generated web printouts are accepted.

You will need to submit materials for each program you apply to. That includes personal statements, CV and letter of recommendation. Your recommender will receive an email from each application instructing them to upload the letters.

Once the application has been submitted, you cannot modify supporting documents. One exception is your C.V., this can be updated up until the application deadline.
