Urology Services at Sibley Memorial Hospital

Kidney's highlighted in position

Sibley Hospital offers a full spectrum of urology services, provided by a diverse group of fellowship-trained experts who represent every major urological subspecialty. Our urologists range from Johns Hopkins specialists with the Brady Urological Institute at Sibley who are able to perform surgical procedures otherwise only available at top academic medical facilities to  highly skilled community physicians, who treat a wide range of urologic conditions.

This mix of medical staff allows us to offer the expertise, staff and resources of a university hospital in a comfortable clinic setting.

Laparoscopic Urologic Surgery

Sibley boasts some of the most technologically advanced surgical and imaging equipment in Washington, D.C., which allows our surgeons to offer robotic radical prostatectomies. In these minimally invasive procedures, the surgeon controls the state-of-the-art tool to perform surgery through a tiny incision with an otherwise impossible level of precision.

These 90-minute procedures are performed on a short stay observation basis. Typically, patients have very little post-operative discomfort followed by a quick return to function. In select cases, the surgery can even be performed on an outpatient basis.

Minimally invasive procedures tend to have quicker recovery with less pain and scarring than traditional open surgeries. The surgical robot can similarly be used in several other urologic surgeries, including full or partial kidney removal, bladder removal and reconstruction of the renal pelvis.

Complex Kidney Stones

Sibley has extensive experience in treating complex kidney stones. Our urologists use an extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) machine for treatment of small-to-medium kidney stones and some upper ureteral stones.

Sibley is one the few hospitals in the city to offer ESWL, giving our patients the convenience of having access to lithotripsy without having to visit another facility. The procedure takes about an hour and is done under general anesthesia for the patient’s comfort and to minimize kidney movement.
