Biopsies

An accurate biopsy is essential to diagnose and treat breast cancer. The Sullivan Breast Center is a national model in providing expert care using minimally invasive breast imaging and biopsy procedures. Our specialists discuss options with each patient based on their unique situation.

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

Stereotactic breast biopsies are performed by dedicated breast radiologists. This kind of biopsy is performed when the lesion can only be seen on a mammogram. A special camera obtains digital mammography images to localize the lesion. Local anesthesia is administered and a small skin incision is made at the site of the biopsy. A special needle designed to obtain tissue samples is guided to the site. Several samples will be taken and all samples will be sent to a pathologist for analysis.

Ultrasound-guided Breast Biopsy

Ultrasound-guided breast biopsy uses ultrasound to guide the biopsy needle into position. This kind of biopsy is performed when the lesion can be seen by ultrasound; its advantages are speed and comfortable positioning. All ultrasound-guided breast biopsies at Sibley are performed by our dedicated breast radiologists. Using sterile technique, local anesthesia is administered and a small skin incision is made at the site of the biopsy. A special needle designed to obtain tissue samples is guided to the site. Several samples will be taken and all samples will be sent to a pathologist for analysis.

MRI-guided Biopsy

MRI guided breast biopsies are performed by dedicated breast imagers. This kind of biopsy is performed on lesions that are seen on MRI only. On the day of the biopsy, a shorter version of the diagnostic MRI scan is performed and the site is localized using these images. Local anesthesia is administered and a small skin incision is made at the site of the biopsy. A special needle designed to obtain tissue samples is guided to the site of concern. Several samples will be taken and all samples will be sent to a pathologist for analysis.
