Geriatric Psychiatry Inpatient Unit
This nine -bed unit, located on Meyer 6 of The Johns Hopkins Hospital, specializes in the treatment of medically complicated geriatric patients with severe mood and neuropsychiatric disorders. The unit is staffed by psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists and physical therapists who are experts in the care of older adults with psychiatric disorders.
Typically, patients on this unit are ones for whom other inpatient and outpatient treatment modalities have failed and/or they have complicating medical conditions that cannot be managed in other psychiatric programs and who would benefit from acute inpatient psychiatric treatment. The most common disorders treated are major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Patients with neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease that are complicated by serious psychiatric symptoms are also cared for on this unit.
