Physician Consultations

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physicians (physiatrists) assess a patient’s functional abilities, and work to improve impairments such as:

  • Pain
  • Paralysis
  • Sensory loss
  • Spasticity
  • Contractures
  • Amputations
  • Delirium
  • Debility and de-conditioning

Consultation services are provided 7 days a week. Recommendations may include medications, injections, adaptive equipment or rehabilitation therapies. PM&R physicians can also be helpful in educating patients and families about functional prognosis.

We also see patients in acute care to help determine which level of continuing rehabilitation is best for patients to facilitate discharge plans. This may include comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation units, subacute rehabilitation facilities, chronic hospitalization, outpatient rehabilitation programs or in-home rehabilitation services. We assess patients for the rehabilitation programs at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

Adult Rehabilitation Therapy

Our department provides evaluation and treatment throughout The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in a patient and family-centered care approach. We provide physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology services in all settings: ICU, step-down, and inpatient hospital unit on a daily basis. Although the majority of care is provided bedside, some patient care is performed in one of our treatment gyms to maximize patient outcomes. Our therapy staff is divided into multi-disciplinary therapy teams to best match clinical expertise with patient populations: cardiac, ICU, surgery, medicine, neurosciences and oncology.

Acute Care Rehabilitation

Acute care rehabilitation is provided to many patients while in the hospital. Services may consist of any combination of occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech-language pathology. Our team of therapists works with physicians, nurses, case managers and the rest of the multi-specialty team to coordinate a safe discharge plan.

Rehabilitation assessments can help identify deficits in the areas of mobility, activities of daily living, cognitive skills, speech and swallowing. Treatment can provide compensatory techniques to help bridge the gap in ability allowing the highest level of functioning possible. Assistive devices may be provided to enhance mobility and independence in self-care and memory. Patient and family education is a key component to transition to the next level of care.

Patients are referred for therapy services as determined by their physicians.

Pediatric Rehabilitation

Pediatric rehabilitation focuses on function from a developmental perspective. Our pediatric physical, occupational and speech-language therapists at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center provide assessments and treatments to address impairments impacting development, mobility, feeding, self-care, and daily activities to enhance children's performance at home, school and in the community. To promote function and prevent further impairments, we offer exercise programs, splinting, recommendations for positioning, and activities to improve balance, coordination, range of motion, strength, and endurance.

Psychiatric Rehabilitation

Patients with mental health issues often experience impaired executive function as well as overlapping affective and emotional components that impact function in work, play, leisure, social, self-care, or community living skills. Mental health occupational therapists are competent to assess these skills via standardized and non-standardized screening and to make recommendations for treatment and safe discharge. Occupational therapy treatment educates and provides opportunities for patients to practice life management skills using adaptive strategies, so they may become more independent and increase their chances of living successfully in the community with or without support.

Our Hospital Consultation Service Team

We have a dedicated group of therapists who provide consultation and rehabilitation services to patients undergoing treatment at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. This hospital consultation team consists of physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists. They work closely with our rehabilitation physicians to assess our patients’ rehabilitation needs.

The majority of the care we provide is bedside, but sometimes we may use other facilities, such as our treatment gyms. Our therapists are diverse in their skills and experience, and serve a variety of patients.
