The Johns Hopkins Rehabilitation Network offers remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM), a service that allows patients experiencing pain or functional limitations due to a musculoskeletal condition to receive support from their physical or occupational therapist from the comfort of their homes. Our program complements systems that collect and monitor a patient’s self-reported pain and function as well as progress with their home exercise program.
How does remote therapeutic monitoring work?
Remote therapeutic monitoring is an enhancement to physical and occupational therapy services you are already receiving as part of your care plan. After an evaluation, your therapist may recommend including RTM in addition to clinic or telehealth visits.
Home Exercise Program
Your therapist will use MyChart to send you a digital home exercise program that includes videos of each exercise you should complete. RTM also allows your therapist to see how often you complete the exercises and to better track your progress between visits by using short surveys.
Accessing the link through MyChart
Using remote therapeutic monitoring as a patient is easy and only includes a few short steps:
- Attend your scheduled therapy visit(s) as usual, during which your therapist will create a tailored home exercise program.
- Using the link that your therapist provides through MyChart, log in to access your home exercise program and interactive communication tools.
- Follow along with exercise videos, record your progress and complete surveys when you receive reminders (by text and/or MyChart).
Benefits of Remote Therapeutic Monitoring
Convenience
Remote Therapeutic Monitoring allows patients to access high quality videos with instructions on how to properly perform exercises from their home. Patients can also create exercise reminders.
Timely Adjustments
Since therapists have access to patients’ therapy data in real time, they can detect issues sooner, leading to better recovery outcomes.
Personalized Care
RTM connects patients with their therapist, so the therapist can tailor and adjust the exercise plan based on the person’s needs.
Fewer In-Person Visits
For some patients, RTM can reduce the number of in-clinic visits by allowing therapists to check in and monitor patients’ progress remotely.
