Paul Khanuja and Team Perform 47 Free Joint Replacements in Guyana
More than 170 patients have been waiting for a long time to get joint replacement surgery at The Georgetown Public Hospital in Guyana. Thanks to volunteers from Operation Walk Maryland, 47 of them had the surgery this year. Led by orthopaedic surgeon Paul Khanuja, Operation Walk Maryland gathers skilled medical service providers to offer free surgical treatment for patients in developing countries such as Guyana, and in the U.S.
During the 2018 mission, the team of more than 50 volunteers performed more joint replacements than the Guyana hospital did in four years, helping reduce a major backlog of cases. In the past, Operation Walk Maryland helped similar hospitals and patients in Trinidad, India and other countries.
The Perry Initiative: Lynne Jones and Dawn LaPorte Introduce Young Women to Orthopaedics
The Perry Initiative aims to reach out to young women to encourage them to develop interest and pursue careers in the fields of orthopaedic surgery and engineering. The organization partners with leading health care institutions like Johns Hopkins to host lectures and workshops throughout the country for female high school and medical students. “Orthopaedic surgery is an outstanding and very rewarding field, yet it has fewer women than any other surgical subspecialty. It is very important for young women to be exposed to orthopaedics and engineering early, and to see that women can and do succeed in these fields and love what they do,” shares LaPorte.
