Conditions We Treat: Neurofibroma
Neurofibromas are tumors that grow in the connective tissue of nerves. These tumors are usually benign (noncancerous). If a person has numerous neurofibromas, the condition is called neurofibromatosis
Neurofibroma: Why Choose Johns Hopkins

- You will benefit from our multidisciplinary approach, with insights from neurology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and radiology.
- Our practitioners are experienced in diagnosing and addressing all types of neurofibromas, including cutaneous, intramuscular and plexiform types, which can sometimes cause pain or loss of nerve function.
- The Peripheral Nerve Surgery team works closely with experts at the Comprehensive Neurofibromatosis (NF) Center, one of the only centers in the world helping patients with NF type 1, NF type 2 and schwannomatosis.

Treatment for Neurofibromas
Your doctor may recommend observation for neurofibromas that are not causing symptoms.
Following up with regular imaging and using our advanced techniques is a good way to see if a neurofibroma is progressing or changing.
Large neurofibromas can compress nearby structures such as muscles or blood vessels and cause symptoms such as pain, numbness or impaired nerve function. These tumors, as well as those that become cancerous, may require surgical removal.
