In July 2012, the Department of Neurology introduced an instructorship in general inpatient neurology. The goal of this instructorship is to provide neurologists the experience and skill set necessary to excel and lead in a developing area of clinical neurology and academia.
Over the past five years, the structure of this instructorship has evolved to align with the philosophy of the Division of Advanced Clinical Neurology. The instructorship includes not only specialty training in inpatient neurology, but also experience in urgent neurological consultation and post-hospitalization follow-up care in the outpatient clinic.
This structure provides the instructor with experience in urgent neurological evaluation, triage and coordination of care transitions across care settings. When caring for inpatients, instructors attend on the academic general neurology service, providing instruction to residents and students.
Instructors are also expected to pursue complementary training in a variety of areas such as patient safety and quality improvement, clinical research and global neurology. Instructors benefit from further clinical training through divisional and departmental conferences, as well as one-on-one instruction with more senior faculty. Faculty mentors offer academic and research advice to junior faculty.
Finally, instructors gain hands-on experience and training through care unit and department quality and safety committees and projects. Through the course of training, instructors have a chance to develop leadership skills in these areas, with lessons translated from their practice to others through development of educational materials and academic activity.
