Diagnosis and Care for People with Functional Neurological Disorder

The Johns Hopkins Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) Program offers diagnostic evaluation, education and evidence-based treatment options for adults (18 and older) with FND. Whether you experience unexplained seizures or movement symptoms, our team of neurologists, neuropsychologists and rehabilitation experts can help diagnose or rule out FND and connect you with the right specialists based on your diagnosis.

FND Diagnostic Clinics

Are you having seizures or movement symptoms? We have two diagnostic clinics: one for functional seizures, and one for functional movement disorder.
  • Functional Seizure Diagnosis

Seizures may present in different ways, including staring blankly, unusual eye movements, jerking or twitching of the body, confusion and loss of consciousness. If your main symptom is seizures, we offer an evaluation in our epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU). Neurologists at the EMU will use specialized equipment to help determine if the seizures are related to abnormal brain activity.

  • Functional Movement Disorder (FMD) Diagnosis

Neurologic movement symptoms include tremor, weakness, paralysis, curled hand or foot, neck or body twisting, muscle jerks and spasms, and difficulty walking. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, our team offers a diagnostic workup that can help determine if you have a functional movement disorder.

FND Treatment Clinics

Our treatment clinics offer rehabilitation therapy, symptom management and other treatment options for people diagnosed with FND at Johns Hopkins or elsewhere.

Outpatient Clinics

Inpatient Programs

  • Pain Treatment Program

This program can help patients with severe functional symptoms that are not responding to outpatient treatment and are causing significant disability. Treatment emphasizes medication management, psychotherapy and rehabilitation therapies.

  • Inpatient Rehabilitation Program

This program is best for people who have functional movement symptoms, have severe symptoms limiting safety at home and can tolerate three hours of rehabilitation therapy a day. People with FND can expect to stay in an inpatient rehabilitation unit for about 10 days.

Support the FND Program

Our ongoing efforts to care for patients with FND would not be possible without your generous support. If you have any questions regarding donating, contact Kimberly Willis at [email protected]. If using the online form, select “Other” under gift designation and type “FND Program.”
