Nephrology Clinical Elective Rotations
Outside Rotator Applications
To be considered for the Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH) Nephrology Clinical Elective Rotation, please submit all required items in one email to: [email protected]
At least 120 days prior to the start of the desired rotation dates, the visiting resident/fellow will obtain approval from the Program Director for the rotation by emailing the program coordinator the following:
- CV
- Requested rotation dates
- PGY level
- Name of your program director
If approved based on availability, we will work with your program coordinator to create and sign a Program Letter of Agreement (PLA).

- Outside Rotators: Accepted on a case-by-case basis.
- Unavailable Period: We cannot accept outside rotators from May to September.
- Requirement: Submit requests at least 120 days before your rotation start date for Program Director, Credentialing, and GME approval.
- Rotation Dates: Rotations are scheduled in 2-week blocks only (Monday–Friday). Please provide exact dates.

- Previous Rotations: Have you completed a clinical rotation at JHH before? If yes, when?
- Future Rotations: Are you scheduled for any future JHH rotations? If yes, when?
- EPIC Access: Are you currently using EPIC for patient charting?
- If yes, please provide the EPIC version.
- If no, you are required to complete an EPIC Instructor-Led Training Class (virtual) within 2 weeks of your rotation start date. EPIC Training is scheduled 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM. The class date will be confirmed after your credentialing is approved and you receive a JHED ID login

VISMED Applications
Please see the instructions below for how to apply as a visiting medical student for JHU research and clinical electives.

All visiting medical students need to submit an elective application through the VISMED application portal.
Applications for research and clinical electives are accepted no more than six months prior to the elective start date, and must be submitted at least six weeks prior to the start date of the elective. Visiting medical students registered for virtual electives are not permitted to enter School of Medicine research or clinical facilities.

A limited number of clinical electives are available to final year medical students who are attending either LCME or COCA accredited schools, or schools with which Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has a formal affiliation. If you are uncertain if your school has a formal affiliation with JHUSOM, check with a school official before submitting your application.
Research experiences are offered on a space available basis to U.S. and internationally trained medical students.
