Breast cancer is a disease where cells in the breast grow in an abnormal, uncontrolled way and can form a lump (tumor). These cells can sometimes spread to nearby lymph nodes or other parts of the body. It mostly affects women, but men can get it too. Signs can include a new lump, changes in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, nipple changes or discharge, or pain that doesn’t go away but many breast changes are not cancer. We don’t always know why it happens; getting older, certain genes, and family history can raise risk. Screening tests like mammograms can find it early, when treatment often works best. If you notice a change in your breast, talk to a healthcare provider.

Breast cancer screening is important because it helps detect breast cancer early when it's most treatable. By identifying the disease before symptoms appear, screenings can lead to better treatment outcomes and higher survival rates. When cancer is caught early, doctors often have the option to use less aggressive treatments, making the experience easier for patients. Additionally, regular screenings raise awareness about breast health, encouraging women to be more mindful of changes in their bodies. Overall, getting screened regularly not only improves health outcomes but also provides peace of mind, knowing that you are taking proactive steps to care for your health.
