Application Process

The Johns Hopkins Dietetic Internship will consider all qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, age, national origin, mental or physical disability, genetic information, veteran status, or any other status protected by federal, state, or local law.

Candidates with a GPA of 3.00 or greater will be considered. Select applicants will be asked to participate in an interview as part of the selection process. Final acceptance is contingent upon successful completion of an employee health physical, drug screen and background check, as per procedure for all individuals working at Johns Hopkins Bayview. Selection of interns will be based on the following six areas:

  • Conceptual ability
  • Leadership ability
  • Overall preparation
  • Organizational skills
  • Self-direction
  • Interpersonal skills

Effective January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) will require a minimum of a master’s degree to be eligible to take the credentialing exam to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN). More information about this requirement is available on CDR's website. In addition, CDR requires that individuals complete coursework and supervised practice in program(s) accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Graduates who successfully complete the ACEND-accredited DI program at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center are eligible to apply to take the CDR credentialing exam to become an RDN.

  1. Johns Hopkins Dietetic Internship

    Minimum requirements for the Johns Hopkins Dietetic Internship include:

    • Completion of a Didactic Program in Dietetics (including veritifaction statement) by start date of the internship program
    • Completion of a graduate degree (including official final transcript with conferral date) by the start date of the internship program

    The Johns Hopkins Dietetic Internship participates in the online Dietetics Inclusive Centralized Application Services (DICAS). See DICAS for specific application details. The online application must be completed by January 15.

    Applications should include official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, resume, personal statement (see details below), and three letters of recommendation.

    Applicants must pay a $50 Johns Hopkins Dietetic Internship application fee by January 15.

    Applicants considered for this track will be scheduled for a virtual interview.

  2. Johns Hopkins Dietetic Internship / Rutgers MS Track

    Minimum requirements include:

    • Completion of a Didactic Program in Dietetics (including verification statement) by start date of the internship program
    • Completion of a bachelor’s degree (including official final transcript with conferral date) by the start date of the internship program. 

    Apply to both Rutgers SHP and the Johns Hopkins Dietetic Internship via DICAS online application. Please include in your applications which track you are applying to: the Johns Hopkins DI/Rutgers MS Track. The Johns Hopkins Dietetic Internship DICAS application deadline is January 15.

    DICAS applications should include official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, resume, personal statement (see details below), and three letters of recommendation.

    Applicants must pay a $50 Johns Hopkins Dietetic Internship application fee by January 15.

    Applicants in consideration will be scheduled for two virtual interviews with Rutgers and the Johns Hopkins DI selection committees. Rutgers and the Johns Hopkins DI will jointly rank applicants.
  3. Early Action Process for PSU BS/MPS IUG Students Only

    Students currently enrolled in the Bachelors of Science/Master of Professional Studies in Nutritional Sciences (BS/MPS) accelerated master’s program (IUG) at The Pennsylvania State University (PSU), are eligible to participate in the early action option with the Johns Hopkins Dietetic Internship. A maximum of six interns will be accepted through this affiliation. Interested students will apply through the Dietetics Inclusive Centralized Application Services (DICAS) by November 15. Applications should include unofficial transcripts, resume, personal statement (see details below), and two letters of recommendation. Applications will be reviewed and qualified candidates will be contacted for an interview. The Johns Hopkins Dietetic Internship will inform students of their admission status by January 15.

Personal Statement (Required for All Options)

In addition to the Dietetic Internship Program application, please submit a personal statement including all of the elements listed below. The personal statement should be limited to three pages. The statement will be evaluated on the basis of clarity of expression and thought, as well as inclusion of all requested elements.

  • How did you become interested in nutrition and dietetics?
  • Why are you interested in applying to the Johns Hopkins Dietetic Internship?
  • What are your short and long term goals as a Registered Dietitian, and how will this internship prepare you to meet them?
  • Identify strengths you will bring to the internship, and areas for professional development.
  • Include any significant accomplishments and/or events that have affected your growth and preparation for our internship program that are not identified in any other part of your application.
