BrighT STAR Timeline

  1. 2014 (Milestone) : JHCC Blood Cultures

    JHCC implements initiative to guide clinicians in the use of blood cultures when evaluating patients with signs and symptoms of sepsis.

  2. 2016 (Milestone) : ACH and UVA

    Program extended to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital and University of Virginia Children's Hospital.

  3. 2017 (Milestone) : BrighT STAR Blood

    The program expanded to 14 hospitals with funding from the Agency fir Healthcare Research and Quality to optimize blood culture use.

  4. 2018 (Milestone) : JHCC Respiratory Cultures

    JHCC implements clinical practice strategy to guide clinicians in the use of respiratory cultures when evaluating mechanically ventialated patients for respiratory infections.

  5. 2019 (Milestone) : Consensus Conference 1

    29 subject matter experts gathered for a two day Delphi Method conference. Consensus recommendations were created on when to safely avoid blood cultures in PICU patients.

  6. 2020 (Milestone) : Fever Algorithm

    JHCC implements broader clinical decision support tool to optimize evaluation of PICU patients with fever targeting blood, respiratory and urine cultures.

  7. 2021 (Milestone)

    BrighT STAR Respiratory

    Additional funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality allowed the expansion of the respiratory culture program across BrighT STAR sites.

  8. 2023 (Milestone)

    BrighT STAR Sustains

    BrighT STAR Blood sites sustained a reduction in blood culture rates for a further 24 months after the implementation period ended.

    Consensus Conference 2

    41 subject matter experts convene for a second Delphi Method conference. Recommendations were created on when best to obtain endotracheal cultures in PICU patients.

    International Reach

    Site champions from Alder Hey, Liverpool, England approached BrighT STAR about adapting and implementing BrighT STAR Blood program for a NHS PICU.

  9. 2024 (Milestone) :

    BrighT STAR Sustains

    BrighT Star Respiratory sites sustain a reduction in respiratory culture rates for the first year after the end of the implementation period.

    BrighT STAR Libra

    A NHLBI-funded randomized, single-blind interventional hybrid pilot study explore the impact of different strategies for blood culture reduction.
