Research Interests: Sexually transmitted diseases
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are very common and include human papilloma virus, herpes simplex virus, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, mpox, and others that are transmitted through vaginal, oral, or anal sex. Our research focuses on the epidemiology of STIs, mail-in STI testing, effective prevention and treatment strategies, characterizing and developing approaches for addressing antimicrobial resistance among organisms, developing rapid diagnostic tests, and the role of the vaginal microbiome. In addition to several outpatient practice locations at Johns Hopkins Medicine, our clinicians work closely with colleagues in the Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) to provide STI prevention, diagnosis and treatment services in Baltimore. Matthew Hamill, MBCHB, PhD, MPH, is the Clinical Chief of the BCHD STI program.
