Faculty Development Sessions
Sessions are regularly scheduled for the 2nd Wednesdays of the month from 12:00 - 1:00 PM. Through these sessions, we aim to help faculty improve their skills in multiple areas, including medical education, leadership development, research, and professional development.

Academic Support
Faculty members are encouraged and supported to pursue scholarship.
To facilitate academics, our division features the Johns Hopkins Hospitalist Scholars Program, an innovative program designed to provide academic funding (up to $12,000 per year) for each faculty member who seeks to build an academic career at Hopkins. Our faculty also benefit from fruitful academic collaboration with other faculty in the division and across other specialties. We have a broad range of academic interests ranging from venous thromboembolic disease to system innovations that improve hospital efficiency and patient engagement.
Our division also features the Johns Hopkins Hospitalist Division Innovation Grants, which provide academic funding (up to $30,000 per year) to support full-time and part-time faculty members. Successful proposals can support a variety of projects, including research, operational, educational, and/or quality and safety activities.
GIM Academic Resources
Clinician-Educator Mentoring & Scholarship Program
General Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins is home to over 30 outstanding Clinician-Educators whose primary responsibility is providing expert patient care at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and it affiliated practices at the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center and Green Spring Station. Clinician-Educators also play a leading role in teaching medical students, residents, fellows and peers. Although primed to excel in these settings from the outset, most Clinician-Educators need additional mentorship to develop into nationally recognized academicians. On October 1, 2007, Hopkins GIM established the Clinician-Educator Mentoring and Scholarship Program (CEMSP) to meet this need.
Methods Core
The GIM Methods Core was established in July 2008 to provide integrated research services to the Division faculty and fellows and to Osler Housestaff. The Methods Core is home to methodologically oriented PhD faculty in the GIM Division with expertise in epidemiology, biostatistics, behavioral medicine, and data analysis. These faculty members oversee a team of graduate research assistants prepared to conduct statistical analysis for research projects conducted by Clinician-Educators.

Key Program Features
- Eligibility: Salaried faculty members are eligible for the program, including part-time salaried faculty. Part-time casual faculty members are not eligible.
- Amount and source of funds: Funds will accrue at an annual rate of up to $12,000 for each full-time faculty member. Maintenance of the program is contingent on the financial viability of the Division of Hospital Medicine.
- Disbursement amount depends on the faculty member’s clinical commitment to the Division of Hospital Medicine
- The funds must be used solely for academic projects and career development within the Division of Hospital Medicine (rather than for career development that will enhance a transition to another type of position at Hopkins, such as a subspecialty fellowship, or to a hospitalist position at an institution other than Johns Hopkins Hospital). Faculty members cannot use the funds for other purposes, such funding financial bonuses, sabbaticals, or buying “protected time”.
- Requires formal application and approval.
- Multiple applications may be submitted and funded provided that the funds are available in the individual faculty member’s account.
- Funds are not portable beyond JHU; if the funds are not used, they are returned to the Hospitalist Scholars Program and are not disbursed to the individual upon termination of employment at Hopkins.
- Unused funds for approved projects are available to the individual faculty member for future use. For example, if a faculty member obtains $20,000 from the program to fund a pilot study and preliminary results after expending $5,000 suggest that the project is untenable, the remaining $15,000 would be returned to the individual’s Hospitalist Scholars account. Access to these funds requires a subsequent formal proposal.
- The total dollar amount of any faculty member’s Hospitalist Scholars Account may not exceed $75,000. Funds that do not accrue because this limit is reached are forfeited. Once the fund has been depleted below this level, additional accrual can occur on a monthly basis, but the rate of accrual is not increased to “make up” for missed accrual. Example: A faculty member’s Hospitalist Scholars Fund accrues to a total of $75,000 and funds stop accruing. 18 months later a successful project is launched and the account is drawn down by $5,000 per month for 6 months. During the period of draw-down, the account resumes accrual of funds at the rate defined in sections 2 and 3 above. However, the funds that would have accrued during the 18 month period during which the fund was “capped” are forfeited.
- Funds are maintained in an individual faculty member’s account for a total of 18 months following transient termination of employment from Hopkins (to allow the faculty member to take a sabbatical from clinical practice for coursework, for example). If the faculty member has not returned to Hopkins as a Hospitalist within 18 months, the remaining funds are returned to the Hospitalist Scholars Fund. For individuals who seek to use funds to obtain formal training (such as tuition for a full-time advanced degree that precludes continued full-time clinical employment), the funds will be disbursed upon return to Hopkins as a reimbursement for the incurred expenses.

Since the program is funded through clinical dollars, the Division of Medicine and Division of Hospital Medicine maintain the prerogative to reduce funding of the Hospitalist Scholars Program in keeping with financial pressures and mandates. Should there be insufficient funds available during any given year, the accrual for that year will be reduced proportionately for each Hospitalist.
Johns Hopkins Hospitalist Division Innovation Grants
The Division of Hospital Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital offers innovation grants to full and part-time hospitalist faculty who have projects that enhance the Hospitalist Division’s academic profile. Maximum funding per proposal is $30,000.
