The Johns Hopkins Department of Cardiac Surgery invites applications for the Heart Failure ASTP Fellowship, designed for a board-certified general surgeon who is board-eligible in cardiothoracic surgery. This fellowship provides advanced subspecialty training in the operative and perioperative management of patients with advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support (MCS), and heart transplantation. Building upon standard cardiothoracic training, the fellowship prepares the surgeon for a career with a focused expertise in advanced heart failure and transplantation. Join the team to operate as a fully trained cardiothoracic surgeon, supporting the growing heart transplant volume, participating in donor organ recoveries, VAD implantations, and emergent ECMO cannulations.

Program Highlights

• Johns Hopkins performed 75 heart transplants in the past year, and is expected to perform 85 this year, with a programmatic goal of safely expanding to 100 transplants annually.
• We initiate ECMO support for approximately 120 patients each year, making this one of the most active ECMO programs in the nation.
• Our program is supported by a dedicated Heart Failure Advanced Fellow ensuring robust collaboration and continuity of patient care.
• The Cardiac Surgery team works in close partnership with the Johns Hopkins Heart Failure Program, and the successful candidate will collaborate closely with the Director of Heart Transplantation and the multidisciplinary transplant team.

Teaching & Mentorship

You will receive direct mentorship from the Director of Heart Transplantation and the faculty in advanced heart failure surgery, MCS, and heart transplantation. The faculty will focus on advancing your clinical talent and shaping your post-fellowship career trajectory.

Candidate Qualifications

• MD or equivalent, with eligibility for licensure in Maryland.
• Successful completion of an accredited cardiothoracic surgery residency.
• Board-certified (or board-eligible) in cardiac surgery.
• Demonstrated excellence in adult cardiac surgery with specific expertise in transplantation, MCS, coronary revascularization, and heart failure surgery.
