Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic syndrome occurs in patients who have:
There are five criteria for diagnosing patients with metabolic syndrome. You must have at least three out of the five criteria to receive a diagnosis of metabolic syndrome.
Criteria | Measurement |

Elevated waist circumference | Men — Equal to or greater than 40 inches (102 cm) |
Women — Equal to or greater than 35 inches (88 cm) | |
Elevated triglycerides | Equal to or greater than 150 mg/dL |
Reduced HDL cholesterol | Men — Less than 40 mg/dL |
Women — Less than 50 mg/dL | |
Elevated blood pressure | Equal to or greater than 130/85 mm Hg |
Elevated fasting glucose | Equal to or greater than 100 mg/dL |
Treatment of metabolic syndrome
Treatment for metabolic syndrome includes learning weight management techniques such as changing your diet and increasing your physical activity. For some patients, they may require a medication to treat one or more of the components of metabolic syndrome depending upon results of a medical evaluation.
