A Letter from the Director

Welcome! Thank you for taking the time to learn more about The Johns Hopkins University’s Urology Residency Program. The Brady Urological Institute opened in 1915 and was the first urology residency in the country. Since its inception, the program has trained exceptional clinical and academic urologists, many of whom currently serve as chairs or professors at premier urology programs throughout the United States and beyond.

Although our program has a long legacy with a rich tradition of excellence, the Brady remains at the forefront of urologic innovation. Our department continues to push the boundaries of clinical, surgical, and scientific urology. Known worldwide for our many advances in urologic oncology, our Department offers the full experience of training with faculty who are experts in their respective fields, including endourology, male reconstruction, female pelvic medicine, voiding dysfunction, infertility, sexual health and pediatric urology. Our surgical experience is cutting-edge and utilizes the most state-of-the-art urological technology and techniques, allowing our residents to be facile endoscopists, laparoscopists, open surgeons and roboticists.

One of the truly exciting aspects of our urology residency program is our unaccredited research year that allows our residents to develop their academic portfolio and further their professional development. During this unaccredited year, our residents pursue research in their areas of interest with consistent mentorship from our experienced academic faculty. Our research opportunities are limitless, extending from the basic science and translational to clinical, educational and policy initiatives.

Reflective of the innovation inherent in our Department, our educational curriculum continues to evolve to meet the needs of our future urology leaders. From advanced laparoscopy and robotic simulation to elucidation of the “hidden curriculum,” our program provides resident learners with the tools to become the future of academic urology. In order to cultivate this successful learning atmosphere, our department strives to ensure a diverse and inclusive learning environment with a focus on resident and faculty wellness.

Our Mission

In accordance with the policies and procedures set by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the Residency Training Program for the Brady Urological Institute is a formal ACGME-accredited, post-graduate medical education program.

The mission of The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is tripartite: education, research and patient care. Similarly, the department of Urology holds these same three elements as the core of our mission.

• Education. Our residency program provides a graduated series of highly structured experiences, designed to train residents in a broad range of urologic practices.
• Research. The Brady Urological Institute was founded on the premise that a strong emphasis on basic research is fundamental to the advancement of our field. Our residents are offered multiple research opportunities throughout the residency. During the fourth year of urologic training, residents are given 12 months of protected research time. It is during this research time that most of our residents fully mature in their urologic training and identify specific areas of interest.
• Patient Care. Resident participation in patient care is fundamental to our program, with rotations in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Residency training is conducted in two separate hospitals, The Johns Hopkins Hospital and The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Our residents also spend time working at our outpatient center, Green Spring Station.

Our program is specifically designed to produce fully trained academic urologists. Within the past 20 years, virtually all our resident graduates have assumed faculty positions in major academic centers and many of them have gone on to become chairs within their departments.

In our current era of increasing administrative, bureaucratic and fiscal demands, success in academia requires a strong sense of purpose, excellent mentoring with strong role models, and strong clinical skills. We believe that our program provides the optimal environment to facilitate such success.

Application and Requirements

Minimum Requirements

Minimum requirements for acceptance into the urology residency program are:

• Graduation from an accredited medical school
• Eligibility for medical licensure in Maryland

We review all applications and grant interviews based on your:

• Medical school record
• Research experience
• Extracurricular activities
• Letters of recommendation

Applicants are ranked on the basis of high moral, ethical and professional qualifications by the Resident Selection Committee for final selection in the Urology Matching Program.

Our Facilities

Throughout your residency, you’ll have access to our state-of-the-art education, patient care and research facilities, which include:

• The Brady Urological Institute - The historic Marburg Building houses the clinical and laboratory facilities of the Department of Urology. Facilities include 8,300 square feet of modern research space, library, offices and conference rooms, 44 inpatient beds, and laboratories dedicated to genetic linkage analysis and digitized image analysis.
• The Johns Hopkins Children's Center - Located on The Johns Hopkins Hospital campus, the Children's Center has a large pediatric intensive care unit and neonatal intensive care unit and is the pediatric trauma center for the State of Maryland.
• Urology Outpatient Clinic - Housed in the nine-story Outpatient Center on The Johns Hopkins Hospital campus, this 10,000-square-foot facility features urologic endoscopy, imaging and urodynamics, making it the ideal diagnostic center.
• Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center - This 330-bed teaching facility has state-of-the-art operating rooms and dedicated urology clinical facilities, including the W.W. Scott Urology Library and a laboratory to assess new minimally invasive technologies.
• Green Spring Station - The Green Spring Station Pavilion III is a new facility that houses the outpatient urology clinic, the outpatient procedural center and the ambulatory surgery center.
