Advancing Your Pharmacy Technician Role

Pharmacy Technicians at The Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH) and The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (JHBMC) have a variety of opportunities for growth. JHH Department of Pharmacy has established a clear pathway for advancement for all pharmacy technicians.

The Pharmacy Technician Career Ladder has four levels of advancement:

  • Pharmacy Technician Trainee
  • Pharmacy Technician I
  • Pharmacy Technician II
  • Pharmacy Technician III

The JHH Department of Pharmacy supports interested candidates who want to become pharmacy technicians through The Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) Pharmacy Technician Training Program. Candidates enrolled in the Pharmacy Technician Training Program will be hired as Pharmacy Technician Trainees and will prepare candidates to be obtain national pharmacy technician certification. Pharmacy technicians that become nationally certified through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) advance from Pharmacy Technician I to Pharmacy Technician II. In order for individuals to progress to Pharmacy Technician III, they must be PTCB certified, achieve a minimum of “meets expectations” on their annual eval, have worked at JHH for a minimum of 1 year, be in good standing, be competent and willing to assume a wide variety of responsibilities within the pharmacy, and demonstrate leadership qualities.
