Volunteer at The Johns Hopkins Hospital

The Department of Volunteer Services at the Johns Hopkins Hospital will temporarily suspend processing of volunteers for all clinical research and laboratories. We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause. Please note if you currently have active research volunteers they may continue to volunteer with you. We will keep you updated as we work to reinstate processing for these volunteer positions. Should you have questions please contact Jade Hewitt, Assistant Director of Patient Experience, at Jhewitt8@jhmi.edu.

Please carefully read the following steps to become a volunteer at The Johns Hopkins Hospital:

  • Adults 18 years of age and older must submit a general application
  • High school students at least 15 years of age can apply to our Summer Junior Volunteer Program beginning in January 1, 2020 until March 20, 2020.
  • All candidates who have been pre-selected by a department for a volunteer position can submit a preplaced application.
  • All candidates 18 years of age and older interested in volunteering with animal-assisted therapy please apply here.

Please be on the lookout for an email from Volunteer Services with instructions on how to become an active volunteer for The Johns Hopkins Hospital. This will include instructions on how to access your volunteer portal, the online training courses, how to complete your occupational health clearance, and your background check. You can expect to receive this email within three to four business days after submitting your application.

All applicants are required to fill in their social security numbers, so that JHED I.D.’s can be created. If you are an international applicant, please bring this to our attention for us to accommodate you. While this may be a point of hesitation for some, please be reassured that Johns Hopkins’ IT Department is always secured and well equipped with encrypted database systems that protect not only the information of volunteers but patients, their families, and of all staff both nationwide and internationally.
