Maryland woman donates part of liver to mother of late son's best friend with groundbreaking procedure

Two mothers, Anjanette and Mary Ann, reconnect 11 years later after the recent loss of Anjanette's son. Through this meeting, Anjanette discovered that Mary Ann had end-stage liver disease. After learning she was a match, Anjanette became Mary Ann's liver donor. The mothers met transplant surgeon Dr. Benjamin Philosophe, who used groundbreaking techniques and robotic advancements to provide Mary Ann with a life-saving liver transplant.

Benefits of Living Liver Donation

In the United States, more than 17,500 patients are on the waiting list to receive a liver transplant. Although more than 6,000 liver transplants are performed every year, many patients need alternative solutions. Watch Dr. Benjamin Philosophe as he discusses the benefits of living donation and how it not only saves the life of a recipient, but also frees up a liver for a patient on the waiting list.

Liver Transplant for Biliary Atresia | Alicia's Story

Alicia was diagnosed with biliary atresia at 3 weeks old. The family flew from Nairobi to Baltimore to get additional care and ultimately a liver transplant for Alicia at Johns Hopkins Children's Center. After finding out both parents were a match for liver transplant, Alicia's father decided to be the living donor for Alicia. Alicia became the youngest living donor transplant recipient at Johns Hopkins and possibly, in the country.

Living Donor Liver Robotic Surgery

Traditionally, living liver donation involves a large incision made in the donor’s abdomen to obtain the liver portion needed for the transplant, but recovery can be complicated by post-operative pain and the need for an epidural to manage it, as well as an increased risk of infection. The robotic surgery system — which is minimally invasive — divides and removes the transplantable healthy lobe of liver in a way that is much easier on the patient.

The robotic arms — which the surgeon controls from a console are linked to a high-resolution camera — that enable magnified views of the surgical field, operate with extremely precise movements, and most importantly, make smaller incisions and perform more delicate tissue removal than open surgery. For the donor, this means less pain, faster recovery and better post-operative outcomes.

The robotic approach has significant advantages over the open procedure for liver surgery in general, and these benefits can now be applied to living liver donor transplants.
