Graduate Student Transportation and Parking
Among biking, the bus, walking and driving, graduate students at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have a variety of options for their daily commute to campus.
Biking/Walking
- Some students who live in nearby neighborhoods often walk or ride a bike to campus. Bike racks are available — two of the largest racks are in the Rutland Avenue breezeway and the Preclinical Teaching Building Courtyard.
- To help keep your bicycle safe, secure it to the bike rack. Also, secure removable parts, engrave the bicycle, and keep the bike’s purchase and identifying information.
- For your own safety, make sure that you have reflectors/lights on your bicycle, follow traffic laws and wear a helmet.
- If you walk around campus at night, consider using an escort from Johns Hopkins Medicine Corporate Security. Escorts are available 24/7 by calling 410-955-5585.
- Please note that the escort service is confined to campus boundaries.
Shuttles
The Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine provide several shuttles free of charge. The most popular line is the Homewood-Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions (JHMI) shuttle, which runs from the Homewood campus to the medical campus with stops in Charles Village and Mount Vernon, and at Penn Station. Shuttles also run to Patterson Park, Bond Street Wharf (Fell’s Point), Green Spring Station, and Mount Washington and other Johns Hopkins campuses including Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Eastern High School.
Public Transportation
Baltimore’s public transit system includes buses, a subway line, the light rail and commuter trains. The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) provides more information.
Master's students and Ph.D. students not covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement
Subsidized student passes for all buses, the light rail and the subway are available for $25 per month. Monthly passes for the Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) train are valid for MTA bus, light rail and subway lines. To enroll for the MTA discounted pass:

- The MTA emails Ph.D. Student Employees to inform them of their eligibility.
- Ph.D. Student Employees elect to purchase the All-Access College Transit Pass.
Reimbursement Procedures:

Driving/Parking
If you are unable to bike, walk or take public transportation to campus, there are several parking options.
Subsidized On-Site Parking: A limited number of subsidized parking spaces are provided in three campus garages for graduate students at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for $55 per month, which is deducted from your paycheck. To apply for a subsidized parking space, please see the following directions. You cannot obtain on-site subsidized parking by going to the parking office.
- Fill out the GSA Subsidized Parking Request Form.
- Once granted, subsidized parking is valid for 24 months. After that point, you are invited to extend your subsidized parking for another 24 months.
- Indicate your preference for the garages. If you want the first available space regardless of location, list the garages in order of preference. You cannot transfer to another garage once assigned a subsidized spot.
- Any questions should be sent to [email protected]
There is currently a waitlist for subsidized on-site parking. The wait time can range from a month to more than a year. Names on the waitlist are in the order in which applications are received, and there is one waitlist for all garages. When a parking space is available, you will be notified by email. You have one week to accept the spot before it will be offered to the next student on the list.
Nonsubsidized On-Site Parking: Students can also buy a parking space in a campus garage for $120 per month. To apply, please visit the parking office in the Nelson/Harvey Building, Room 108. In addition to single-driver parking passes, carpool parking passes are available.
Commuter Parking Lots: Two satellite lots are available for student use, both of which are free. Frequent shuttle service is provided from the lots to campus, but these lots are only open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. For space on a satellite lot, please visit the Parking Office in the Nelson/Harvey Building, Room 108.
- Monument Lot: Located at 3700 E. Monument St., about 1.3 miles east of campus, this lot is convenient for drivers coming from Interstate 95. A $20 refundable deposit is required for a lot pass.
- Fallsway Lot: This parking lot is at 545 N. High St. and is convenient to Interstate 83.
Free “Base Access” On-Site Parking: Garage parking, except at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, is open to all Johns Hopkins Medicine employees free of charge from 3 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. Monday through Friday, and on weekends and holidays. You must register for base access to enter and exit the garages. Visit the Johns Hopkins Medicine Parking Office in the Nelson/Harvey Building, Room 108 to be granted base access.
