Application Requirements and Deadlines
We require the following items to be included in your application materials:
- Personal Statement
- Dean’s Letter and Transcript
- USMLE Scores (Steps I and II, when available)
- At least three (3) letters of recommendation from faculty members with whom you have worked (Note: We do not require a letter from your department chairman.)
Prior to and during the virtual visit for the required personal interview, we encourage applicants to familiarize themselves with Baltimore and the Harriet Lane Residency through our website and during virtual discussions with faculty and residents.
Our interview is not a test of a candidate’s abilities nor is it conducted in that fashion. Emphasis is placed on medical school recommendations, and the interview is principally designed to introduce the applicant to the residency program and vice versa.
Three in addition to your dean’s letter.
No. However, if you have worked closely with your chairman in a clinical or research setting, it would be appropriate to include a letter from him or her.
No. We encourage you to ask for letters from faculty with whom you have worked closely and who will best be able to assess your clinical and/or research abilities. However, it is recommended that one of your letters come from a pediatrician.
ERAS allows as many letters of recommendation as you feel necessary; however, no more than four letters may be sent to any individual program.
Once your application, transcript and dean’s letter have been reviewed, all applicants will be notified by email through ERAS whether they have been offered an interview or not.
Once applications have been reviewed and notification has been received that you are offered an interview, interviews will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis.
