Created through a generous philanthropic gift from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Sheikh Khalifa Stroke Institute signals a new direction in the understanding of stroke and opens an era of renewed hope for patients, families and communities in the U.S. and UAE.

The institute, with locations in Baltimore (U.S.) and Abu Dhabi (UAE), draws on Johns Hopkins’ vast leadership in stroke diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation, including biomedical research; innovative technology design; acute medical and surgical treatment; brain repair and neuroplasticity; behavioral recovery; prevention and public health.

Meet Justin McArthur, M.B.B.S., M.P.H.

Justin McArthur, director of the Johns Hopkins Department of Neurology and director of the Sheikh Khalifa Stroke Institute, is nationally and internationally recognized for his work in studying the natural history, development and treatment of HIV infection, multiple sclerosis and other neurological infections and immune-mediated neurological disorders. Under his leadership, the Department of Neurology has expanded its focus on stroke to include novel rehabilitation strategies and the establishment of two comprehensive stroke centers.
