To help people recover from stroke and similar neurological injuries, Johns Hopkins offers an advanced treatment program housed in a high-tech clinical space called a super room. Located in our Green Spring Station clinic in Lutherville, Maryland, SENRG is a combination of specialized technologies designed to promote sensory, motor and cognitive stimulation, and a specialized room designed to be an oasis of calm and enjoyment. Our goal is to help patients improve movement by encouraging and reinforcing positive behaviors and experiences in a joyful setting.
Who May Benefit from the Program
- The SENRG program may benefit most people who have experienced a stroke and have arm weakness or problems with movement coordination. The more recent the stroke, the higher the potential for improved function.
- While treatment focuses on arm recovery, participants may also see improvements in cognition, speech, balance and vision.
- Our team is eager to accommodate people with all levels of impairment.
Schedule an Appointment
This program is self-pay, and a set fee is due before starting the program. Our team will discuss costs with you and help explore insurance coverage by providing all necessary billing codes and paperwork. However, because of the unique nature of this therapy, we cannot guarantee insurance reimbursement.

How SENRG Works
Enriched Environment
The “super room” is a warm, inviting space featuring immersive technology that engages all your senses and helps the brain rebuild disrupted pathways. Within SENRG is the technology, the people and the engaging space that exists for the patient and patient’s family and friends.
Complex Movements
Under the guidance of experts, high-dose, high-intensity movement therapy will challenge your range of motion, strength, dexterity and other crucial functions affected by stroke. Our goal is to encourage recovery of not only arm function, but also other lost functions. Patients will engage in non-task based, complex movements.

What to Expect
The SENRG program includes regular appointments held multiple days per week at our location in Lutherville, Maryland. If you do not live in the area, our team can provide travel and hotel recommendations. We can also connect you with the Johns Hopkins medical concierge services to help coordinate your travel and care.
-
The evaluation includes:
- A concierge vascular neurology assessment with Dr. Zeiler to discuss the underlying cause of the stroke, prevention strategies and recovery interventions.
- Ongoing coordination with our team to determine the timing of therapy appointments to best fit your needs. We will also consider personal preferences, including food and drinks that will be provided during breaks.
- Occupational therapy assessment to evaluate function before our protocol. Occupational therapists will also provide hands-on guidance throughout the neuro restorative therapy, including strategies to boost participation in gameplay.
-
The therapy schedule is tailored to each patient’s needs. We developed several schedule options, each totaling about 30 hours of gameplay (1,800 minutes of time on task).
- Option #1: 4-5 sessions per week for 3-4 weeks with a target time-on-task of 120 minutes per session (usually takes 4 hours to achieve on average), with rest breaks scheduled as needed.
- Option #2: 3 sessions per week for 6-7 weeks with a target time-on-task of 90 minutes per session (usually takes 3 hours to achieve on average), with rest breaks scheduled as needed.
-
After the program is completed, Dr. Zeiler and one of our occupational therapists will perform separate assessments of symptoms and function. The assessment helps us measure progress and identify future rehabilitation needs.
-
Once the therapy program concludes, recovery continues at home. Using additional technologies, we hope to transition the progress made in the super room to the home environment. Various devices may be used at home, such as arm and hand controllers with at-home gamified interventions. Your care team will discuss the best approach to continuing recovery at home.
